CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Behind a 4-0 spurt by host No. 13 North Carolina in the second inning, Elon University baseball fell short 7-1 to the Tar Heels (4-0) on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18 at Boshamer Stadium.
At the plate,
Jack Roberts hit 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Alex Iadisernia and
Adam Spurlin both went 1-for-4, with Spurlin doubling. On the mound, starter
Ian Evans (0-1) was tagged for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. He had one strikeout in 4.0 complete innings.
Kyle Greenler struck out one Tar Heel batter in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Trevor Kirk allowed two runs through 0.2 innings and
Brian Edgington gave up one hit.
How It Happened: The Tar Heels struck first with four runs in the second inning. After back-to-back one-out walks, a single to left scored the first run of the game. The UNC baserunners then moved to second and third on a wild pitch before a single to right brought both of them home. After an Elon error allowed the batter to reach second on the play, he advanced to third on a ground out and came around on a single through the right side of the Phoenix defense.
Elon was able to get a run back in the top of the third. Roberts hit a leadoff single through the right side and turned on the jets on an Iadisernia hit to right center. The Jackson, N.J., native stole second and
Joe Satterfield drew a walk to run the bases full.
Garrett Stonehouse was then hit by a pitch for the free RBI.
The hosts went up 5-1 in the fourth. With runners on first and second, Spurlin dove to his right and fired to first for what looked to be a highlight play, but upon review Satterfield's foot was pulled off the bag and the Tar Heels earned the RBI single.
Spurlin started off the seventh with a double down the left-field line as Elon looked to close the gap.
Willie Havens pinch hit for
Tyler Stanley and earned a base on balls before being relieved on the bases by pinch runner
Tyler Cranston. Elon was unable to convert though as
Anthony Galason went down swinging and Iadisernia went back to the dugout on a called third strike.
UNC added to its total with two more runs in the eighth. With two outs and runners on first and second, a double to left plated the pair.
Notes: The game marked the first career start for Evans…UNC's seven runs are the fewest that Elon has held a ranked UNC team to since falling to a then-No. 1 squad 5-1 on March 13, 2007…Elon falls to 9-38 in the all-time series, including a 3-22 mark when playing in Chapel Hill…Spurlin, Stonehouse, Satterfield and
Matt Oldham have reached in all four games this season.
On Deck: Elon is back at Latham Park this weekend, Feb. 21-23, as the maroon and gold plays UMass Lowell for the first time in program history.
