Elon Set For Trio of Matches Over the Weekend

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis returns to action this weekend for a match at East Carolina, before the Phoenix returns home for a Sunday double-header with Western Carolina and Chowan respectively. Those contests are slated for Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 1, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

THE SERIES
- Friday marks the 20th matchup between Elon and ECU in program history, with Elon trailing in the overall series 6-13.
- The last time these two programs met, ECU defeated Elon 6-1 on March 16, 2019.
- Elon's matchup with Western Carolina marks the 13th time the two programs will meet with Elon boasting an undefeated 12-0 record in the overall series
- In the most recent contest, Elon dominated WCU 7-0 on April 12, 2014
- The second half of the Phoenix's Saturday double header features the programs first ever matchup with Chowan

ABOUT ELON
- The Phoenix is off to an 9-4 start to the season, and is currently 7-1 in matches played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center
- Elon has won five consecutive matches and eight of its last nine overall
- Most recently, Elon rounded out a 2-0 week after taking down Gardner-Webb 4-1, and UNCW 5-2.
- Sophomore Victoria Saldh was named the CAA Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 26 after leading the Phoenix to victories over Gardner-Webb and UNCW.
- Freshman Shauna Galvin has performed extremely well early on this season, posting a perfect 6-0 record in singles play.
- The tandem of Olivia Archer and Alex Koniaev has led the way for the Phoenix in doubles play, posting a 5-1 record so far this season.
- Victoria Saldh is off to an 8-2 start in singles play, while combining with Sofia Edo to post a 7-2 record in doubles action
- The Phoenix is led by head coach Elizabeth Anderson, who begins her 16th season at the helm for Elon. Anderson currently holds 220 career victories.

SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
- East Carolina is in its 22nd season under head coach Tim Morris, who is a member of North Carolina's Tennis Hall of Fame.
- ECU is off to a 3-5 start to this season falling to William & Mary, 4-2, in its most recent outing.
- The Pirates three wins on the season came against JMU, UNC Greensboro and Campbell respectively.
 
SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA
- Western Carolina is in its second season under head coach Bret Beaver, who led the team to a 12-10 record in his first season at the helm.
- WCU is off to an 0-5 start to this season after losing to South Carolina State, 4-0, in its most recent outing
- The Catamounts boast a roster with three upperclassmen (two seniors, one junior) and four underclassmen (three sophomores, one freshman).
 
SCOUTING CHOWAN
- Chowan is in its second season under head coach Adam Moneypenny, who served as an assistant with the team for six seasons prior to becoming the head coach.
- Chowan is off to a 2-1 start to this season after defeating Mary Baldwin, 9-0, in its most recent outing.
- The Hawks lone loss this season came by way of a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Mount Olivex.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Versus Gardner-Webb, Alex Koniaev led the way for the Phoenix, fighting back against Milijana Ristic in a three-set battle to take home a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win. In doubles, Koniaev combined with Olivia Archer to defeat Ristic and Daniela Naupari, 6-1, to open the afternoon.
- Against UNCW, Olivia Archer led the way for the Phoenix, taking down Sarah Horn in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Archer also combined with Alex Koniaev to defeat Horn and Sarah Merrill 6-1 in doubles play.

UP NEXT
Following this weekend's matches, the Phoenix will return to action on Saturday, March 7, to take on James Madison. That matchup is slated to begin at 11 a.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
