Morris Inducted Into National College Baseball Hall of Fame

LUBBOCK, Texas – One of only 12 coaches at any level of college baseball to win at least 1,500 games, former Elon baseball player Jim Morris headlined the 2020 class of inductees into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

A shortstop who graduated from Elon in 1973, Morris began his coaching career as an assistant at Appalachian State in 1975 before building a program at DeKalb College in Atlanta, Ga. There from 1976-79, he led the team to the 1977 NJCAA World Series in only the second year of the program's history. After seeing DeKalb ranked nationally in three of those four years, Morris accepted an assistant coaching job at Florida State before Georgia Tech named him its head coach in 1982.

From 1982-1993, Morris led the Yellow Jackets to a 504-244-1 record highlighted by 12 consecutive winning seasons, nine straight NCAA regional berths, four straight ACC titles, and a program record 51 wins during the 1987 season. The coach then headed to Miami, Fla. to take over the Hurricanes from 1994-2018. Miami proceeded to post a winning record every season under Morris, who set an NCAA record for guiding a program to the College World Series in his first six years with the 'Canes. Under Morris' guidance, The U posted a record of 1,090-472-3 to go along with national titles in 1999 and 2001, when the skipper added National Coach of the Year honors, as well as ACC regular season crowns in 2008, 2014, and 2016.

Known to players and coaches as "3", Morris led a total of 13 teams to the College World Series and had 32 consecutive years of appearing in the NCAA postseason. Through his 37 years as a Division I head coach, he compiled a record of 1,594-716-4.

Located on the campus of Texas Tech University, the National College Baseball Hall of Fame is operated by the College Baseball Foundation, a non-profit organization formed in 2004. The Foundation annually awards the Brooks Wallace Award to the best shortstop, the John Olerud Award to the best two-way player, the National Collegiate Umpire Award, the Pitcher of the Year Award, and the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year Award. The Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in 2006.
