Four Phoenix Earn CAA Postseason Honors, Iadisernia Named Rookie of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Alex Iadisernia was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Co-Rookie of the Year and Elon University baseball had four members of its program selected to the All-CAA teams as the league office announced its postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon, May 25.

Iadisernia was selected to the CAA's First and All-Rookie Teams. A redshirt freshman from Jackson, N.J., he paced the Phoenix (21-20, 10-8 CAA) on offense. He finished the regular season fourth in the conference with a .366 average and owned team highs in runs scored (37), hits (59), doubles (12), home runs (10), RBIs (29) and total bases (103). He added 23 walks and six stolen bases to his season totals. Defensively, he owned a .979 fielding percentage with 91 putouts and three assists while helping turn one double play. Iadisernia recorded 19 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. He enters the conference tournament on a 27 reached-base streak and a 13-game hitting streak. The CAA named him Co-Player of the Week on April 13 after he hit .389 (7-18) with three home runs, one double, five runs, 12 RBIs, a walk and a stolen base through Elon's 4-0 week against High Point and William & Mary.

Joining Iadisernia on the First Team is Joe Sprake. The Lincroft, N.J. native owned a 6-1 record with seven saves and a 3.24 ERA through 21 appearances this season. He allowed 13 runs (nine earned) on 19 hits and 13 walks while striking out 20 in 25.0 innings pitched out of the pen. The redshirt sophomore held opposing batters to a .226 average, led the CAA in saves and finished tied for third in victories. Towards the end of the regular season, he earned four saves in as many appearances to help the maroon and gold secure wins over Wake Forest, Georgia Southern and Charleston.

Anthony Galason finds himself named to the league's Second Team. The Colts Neck, N.J. native batted .351 this year with 53 hits, 28 runs, seven doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs, 15 walks and a team-high 10 stolen bases. His season totals ranked him tied for seventh in the CAA in hits, eighth in batting and ninth in on-base percentage (.431). Galason led the Phoenix with nine multi-RBI games, he was second with 16 multi-hit games and he posted a 10-game hit streak. The outfielder recorded multiple hits in six straight games to end the regular season, scoring at least once and driving in at least one run in that span. He was named the conference Co-Player of the Week yesterday, marking his second conference weekly honor of the season.

Also named to the All-Rookie Team is Justin Cassella. After breaking into the starting lineup in early April, Cassella primarily batted leadoff for the maroon and gold. His season totals included a .298 clip, 31 hits, 27 runs, nine doubles, one triple, three long balls, 14 RBIs, 51 total bases and 10 bases on balls. The Bernardsville, N.J. native also proved to be quick on the basepaths, swiping nine bags in as many attempts to finish second on the team in stolen bases. The outfielder recorded nine multi-hit games with an 11-game reached-base streak. He was selected CAA Rookie of the Week on April 13 after hitting 12-for-19 (.632) with a 1.105 slugging percentage and a .650 on-base percentage in the team's four games against High Point and William & Mary.

Elon finished the regular season second in the conference's South Division and enters the 2021 CAA Championship as the No. 3 seed. The Phoenix opens the tournament with a 4 p.m. game against sixth-seeded William & Mary on Wednesday, May 26 at UNCW's Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.
