Women’s Soccer Set to Take on Gardner-Webb/American

ELON, N.C.— Elon University women's soccer will host Gardner-Webb on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. prior to traveling to Washington, D.C. to face American on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
 
COVERAGE
Live stats and video will be provided for both matches. Thursday's game will be streamed on FloFC, while Sunday's game at American will be on ESPN+
 
THE SERIES
-Elon leads the overall series against the Runnin' Bulldogs, 13-0.
-Sunday's game will be the first ever between the Phoenix and the Eagles.
 
ABOUT ELON
-The maroon and gold enters the match with a 2-3 record.
-Elon split its pair of games last week, shutting out UNC Asheville 3-0 before falling to NC State 1-0.
-Against the Bulldogs, both Isabelle Paradoski and Lydia Totten scored their first collegiate goals. McKenna Dalfonso also registered her eighth career shutout.
-The scoring output against Asheville was the best Elon had since Oct. 20, 2019 when the maroon and gold defeated James Madison 3-2.
-Dalfonso also stood out against the Wolfpack. The goalkeeper totaled a season-high five saves and career-high 22 shots faced over the course of the game.
-The maroon and gold is led by fourth-year head coach Neil Payne.
 
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
-The Bulldogs enter the match with a 2-4 record, posting back-to-back wins against Jacksonville State (1-0) and Alabama State (1-0).
-Gardner-Webb was picked to finish fifth in the 2021 Big South Conference preseason poll.  
-The head coach of Gardner-Webb is Mike Varga.
 
SCOUTING AMERICAN
-The Eagles (3-2) are currently on a three-game win streak, earning wins against George Washington (2-0), Delaware State (2-0) and Longwood (2-1). For their performances against the Colonials and Hornets, both defender Jordan Mahony and goalkeeper Julia Kato earned Patriot League weekly awards.
-American was predicted to finish 10th in the Patriot League preseason poll.
-The Eagles will take on Old Dominion prior to Sunday's match on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
-American is led by Marsha Harper.

Following Sunday's match, the Phoenix will return home take on Furman at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17.
