Elon Defends Phoenix Invitational Title, Risner and Myers Finish First and Second

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University men's golf team defended its team title at the Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday, as Garrett Risner won the individual competition. This was the seventh annual Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club, a par-71, 6,867-yard Donald Ross design.

Elon's Maroon Team carded a 4-under par 280 in the final round to win by five strokes over Stetson. Elon's Gold Team came in 12th place with an 11-over par 863. Garrett Risner won the individual competition with a 54-hole total of 199 (-14) and Bronson Myers finished second with a 13-under par 200.

"We play in a team format and to win as a team is the most important thing. It takes all five guys. They all contributed, and I couldn't be happier for them," head coach Don Hill said. "I'm so proud of Garrett getting his first collegiate win and I am equally excited for Bronson. He really shouldered the load today with an incredible back nine."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • After shooting the lowest round of the tournament (63) on Monday, Garrett Risner cared a 2-under par 69 in the final round to earn his first college win. The junior made five birdies and finished the week with the second most birdies in the field (19). He also led the tournament in par-3 scoring average (2.83).
  • Risner's 54-hole total of 199 is the lowest in program history, eclipsing Pedro Rabadan's previous record of 203, which he set at last year's Phoenix Invitational.
  • A bogey-free round of 65 helped Bronson Myers finish alone in second in the individual standings. Myers eagled the 12th hole and added three more birdies on his back nine. The senior made just one bogey for the week and made par or better on his final 33 holes. He also paced the field for the week in par-4 scoring (3.79).
  • Juan Callejo Ropero led the way for Elon's Gold Team, as the sophomore posted a final round 70 to tie for 6th place. Ropero made five birdies in the final round, including on two of his first three holes.
  • Matthew Doyle earned his second straight top-15 finish, as the sophomore delivered a final round 72 to tie for 13th. Along with Risner, Myers and Ropero, he was one of four Phoenix players to finish with a sub-par average on par-4s (3.91).
  • Cristian Del Vecchio and Oliver Rotermund rounded out Elon's winning Maroon Team. Del Vecchio tied for 41st after posting a final round 74 and Rotermund finished in a tie for 72nd. Rotermund tied for third in the field and was second for Elon in pars for the week (37).
  • Landon Durham, Pedro Rabadan and Jennings Glenn all shot their lowest scores of the week in the final round, with each carding a 1-under par 70. Rabadan tied for second in par-5 scoring average for the week (4.11).
  • Elon's Maroon Team led the field in par-3 (3.10) and par-5 (4.44) scoring average. The Maroon Team also ranked No. 2 in par-4 scoring average (4.01).
  • Elon's two teams combined for eight eagles on the week.
  • The Maroon Team's 54-hole total of 824 was just three shots short of Elon's 54-hole team scoring record (821), which was set at last year's Phoenix Invitational.
  • This is Elon's first team victory since last year's Phoenix Invitational. Risner's win is the first for an Elon individual since Rabadan won last year's Phoenix Invitational.
