GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University men's golf team wrapped up its fall season on Sunday by earning a runner-up finish at the Grandover Collegiate. UNCG hosted the tournament at the par-72, 6,800-yard East Course at the Grandover Resort.
Matthew Doyle led the Phoenix individuals with a career-best third-place finish. With a 54-hole total of 208, the sophomore finished three shots behind Davidson's Alex Heffner, who won the individual competition with an 11-under par 205. Bronson Myers and Garrett Risner also finished in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard.
The Phoenix carded its best score of the tournament in the final round with a 279. Elon finished with a three-round score of 849 (-15) and finished behind only host UNCG, who won the Collegiate with a 38-under par 826
.
"I'm incredibly proud of the fight and toughness we showed this weekend," head coach
Don Hill said. "Following our last tournament, I challenged the team to put their heads down and work hard in preparation for the Grandover – they responded. While our ultimate goal was to win the tournament, the golf we played was some of the best we've played this fall. Now, it's time to turn our full attention to the classroom and the weightroom. This offseason is critical for what we plan on accomplishing in the spring."
HIGHLIGHTS
- Matthew Doyle posted a final round 70 to secure solo third, his best career college finish. The sophomore was 4-under par through his first 14 holes in the final round before a double-bogey late dropped him back to 2-under. He led Elon for the tournament in par-5 scoring average (4.50) and tied for the third-best par-3 scoring average this week (2.83).
- Bronson Myers birdied his final three holes to finish in a tie for fifth place. The senior's bogey-free final round of 67 (-5) was his third round this fall without a bogey, as he delivered two such rounds at the Phoenix Invitational on Oct. 10-11. He was the only Elon player to finish the week under par on par-4 holes (-1).
- An even par final round of 72 helped Garrett Risner tie for 13th. The junior shot a bogey-free 34 on the back nine of his final round and made four birdies to offset four bogeys on the day. He made a team-high 15 birdies and tied for third in the field in par-3 scoring average for the tournament (2.83).
- Senior Cristian Del Vecchio eagled the par-5 sixth hole on his way to a final round 73, which helped him finish in a tie for 38th place. Del Vecchio was one of 23 players to make an eagle this weekend and one of two Elon players to make one, as Doyle also eagled the sixth in his second round on Saturday.
- Juan Callejo Ropero bounced back from a pair of over-par rounds on Saturday with a 3-under par final round of 69 on Sunday to move into a tie for 48th. The sophomore carded five birdies in his final round, including four of his final nine.
- As a team, Elon led the field for the week in par-3 scoring average (2.95) and ranked No. 3 in par-4 scoring average (4.08).
- The Phoenix made a tournament-best 172 pars and was one of seven schools to record multiple eagles.
