Elon, N.C. – Elon University football kicker
Skyler Davis has been named a first team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
Davis is the first Elon football player named an AFCA First Team All-American since Greg Liggs Jr. was honored in 2019. He joins Liggs, CJ Toogood (2018 Second Team), Aaron Mellette (2012 First Team) and Terrell Hudgins (2009 First Team) as the only Elon honorees from the AFCA since moving to the FCS level in 1999.
Davis finished a stellar career with one of the greatest seasons by any FCS kicker ever. He was 18-of-22 on field goals, which included 7-of-8 from 50+ yards. The seven made field goals of at least 50 yards ties the FCS record for a single-season, a mark that had not been touched in almost 40 years. The two other record holders took 12 attempts from 50+ yards to make seven. No other kicker in the country at any level of college football has made more than four 50+ yard field goals in 2022. Davis finished his career tied for seventh in FCS history with 69 made field goals. He broke the school record with a 53-yard field goal this year and made a clutch 42-yarder with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to tie Richmond, a game Elon would go on to win in overtime. He made a pair of 50+ yard field goals in Elon's FCS playoff game, tying the school record for 50-yarders in a single-game, which he had set during the 2021 season.
Davis has previously been recognized as Stats Perform First Team All-America, Associated Press First Team All-America and FCS ADA First Team All-America. He also was named First Team All-American by Phil Steele and Bluebloods. Davis earned First Team All-CAA honors and was a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place Kicker Award, recognizing the top kicker from outside of the Football Bowl Series (FBS) level.
The Elon football team went 8-4 in 2022 and 6-2 in CAA Football play, good for third place in the final league standings. The Phoenix ended the regular season ranked No. 12 in the country and earned a bid to the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2018. Elon defeated three ranked teams during the season, including handing national seed William & Mary its only regular season defeat. The Phoenix were a perfect 5-0 at home and ended 2022 with a six-game undefeated streak inside Rhodes Stadium, the longest such unbeaten streak in the stadium's history.
