Throwers Shine at Outdoor Opener at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A new school-record in the hammer throw from newcomer Kaitlin McGoogan highlighted the Elon University women's track and field's first meet of the outdoor season at the Bob Davidson Memorial/Bill Webb Combined Events meet on Friday, March 18, on the campus of High Point University.
 
Competing in her first outdoor meet with the Phoenix, McGoogan established a new program record in the hammer throw as the junior took gold with her best throw of 58.40m in the event. Elon also had new personal-record from Kristine Strazdite as she finished sixth with her toss of 49.46m while Lauryn Carlton was seventh at a throw of 49.30m.
 
Another personal-record was set in the javelin throw as Grace Dieleman posted her new personal-best of 38.73m and was fourth overall. Freshman Sophia Beljic was 12th in the event with a heave of 30.82m.
 
In the heptathlon, Hollie Thurgood currently has 1,999 points after competing in four events of the multis on Friday. The sophomore won the heptathlon shot put with a throw of 11.91m.
 
On Deck
The Phoenix closes out its outdoor opening meet tomorrow, March 19, with events beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's shot put.
