ELON – Led by three individual CAA titles, the Elon women's track & field team surged into first place Friday at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Robertson Track & Field Complex.
The Phoenix totaled 66 points through the opening day to lead the team standings, sitting ahead of William & Mary (59) and Monmouth (20) with 15 events remaining to score.
Elon claimed three individual conference titles on day one, highlighted by victories from
Jaqueline Zacharias in the javelin throw,
Alicen Ashley in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and
Katie Blount in the 10,000 meters.
The Phoenix dominated the 10,000 meters, sweeping the top three spots for 24 total points behind Blount's title-winning time of 34:24.65.
Hannah Weber followed in second at 34:33.45 while
Jasmine Young placed third with a personal-best mark of 34:53.30 that moved her to No. 7 in program history.
Zacharias earned the Phoenix's first field-event title of the meet with a winning toss of 46.14 meters (151'4") in the javelin.
Isabella Johnson added four points in the event with a personal-best mark of 37.60m (123'4"), placing fifth, as did
Greta Urbonaviciute (34.12m/111'11") with two points in seventh place.
Ashley captured the conference title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:35.74, improving her own No. 7 mark in Elon program history.
Winter Oaster also scored in the event with a personal-best performance of 10:55.31 to finish sixth.
Johnson turned in another standout performance in the hammer throw, placing second with a school-record toss of 61.68m (202'4"). The sophomore added eight points for the Phoenix, while
Adriana Clarke also scored in the event with a fourth-place finish at 58.57m (192'2").
Elon also positioned itself well in the heptathlon entering Saturday's final three events. Urbonaviciute sits third overall with 3,007 points while
Lizzie Lopez is tied for fourth with 3,005 points through four disciplines.
Lopez posted an event victory in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 25.53 and finished second in the high jump after clearing 1.67m (5'5.75"). Urbonaviciute won the shot put with a mark of 11.91m (39'1") and added personal-best performances in both the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters.
The Phoenix also advanced a number of athletes into Saturday finals.
Quinn Smith,
Abby Beville,
Julia Bell and
Sarah Petitjean all advanced in the 1,500 meters, while
Jenna Gilman and
Gabi Walker qualified in the 800 meters.
Mia Stimpson posted the fastest qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles and Duna Viñals led all qualifiers in the 400-meter hurdles.
Mary Sollars advanced to the 400-meter final after running a personal-best 55.73 that moved her to No. 9 in program history, while
Ja'mia Johnson earned a qualifying spot in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best effort.
