EYEING THOSE RECORDS ALREADY
Elon may have competed just once so far in 2022-23, but the Phoenix has already seen a pair of record lists altered.
- True freshman Hannah Schonhoff has already made her mark as she leaped 5-feet-6.5 (1.69m) in the high jump. That puts her third in program history.
- Graduate transfer Kalli'Ana Botelho made an immediate impact in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds. That places her fifth in program history.
CAA RECOGNITION
Junior sprinter
Piper Jons was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week on Dec. 6 following the team's first meet of the season. Jons won the 400 with a time of 56.47 seconds, more than a full second better than any other competitor at the meet. Her time converts down to 55.73 seconds, more than two seconds faster than anyone else in the CAA so far this year.
NO SLOWING DOWN
Most track and field athletes build throughout a season, posting their top times and marks late in the year. But sophomore sprinter
Meghan Wilcox is already in top form. At the team's season-opening meet in December, Wilcox ran 7.65 seconds in the 60, just .01 seconds off her career-best and school-record time of 7.64 seconds. She reached that time twice a year ago, doing so in the prelims at the VMI Winter Relays as well as at the ECAC Indoor Championships.
ELON IN THE CAA RANKINGS
Piper Jons and
Aliya Barrows rank 1-2 in the CAA in the 400 in the early-going this year. In fact, the Phoenix has numerous individuals ranked among the top 20 in the conference currently.

CAA TO SPONSOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
As membership has changed within the Colonial Athletic Association, the CAA will now hold an indoor track & field championship Feb. 22-23 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va. It will mark the first time the Elon program has had the opportunity to compete for an indoor conference championship since leaving the Southern Conference following the 2013-14 school year. Elon will also continue to compete for an ECAC indoor championship, scheduled to take place March 3-5 and hosted by Boston University. The Phoenix placed third at the ECAC Championships in 2022, scoring 49 points and trailing only UConn and Northeastern among the 39 scoring teams.
LORENZ SET TO ADD TO HER DECORATED CAREER
Redshirt sophomore
Leandra Lorenz has already accumulated a career's-worth of awards on the Elon track and field program. She was named the 2022 CAA Women's Track Athlete of the Year and the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the CAA Outdoor Championship after winning both the 1,500 and the 5,000. She qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round as well, running a time of 4:31.62 in the 1,500 prelims.
LEADERSHIP AND SPORT EXCELLENCE AWARD
Madison George was recognized by the CAA with the 2021-22 Leadership and Sport Excellence Award, given to one student-athlete in each CAA-sponsored sport who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. An engineering major, George maintains a 4.0 GPA and was named a 2022 Goldwater Scholarship recipient. She was also awarded the Elon Lumen Scholarship, awarding her $20,000 to further her research into making the first 3D printed pole vault spikes for women.
HE'S OUR COACH
Mark Elliston was named the CAA Women's Coach of the Year for the second straight year and for the fourth time overall in 2022. It was his sixth Coach of the Year accolade over 16 seasons at Elon.
ELON ALSO EXCELS ACADEMICALLY
The Elon track & field team was honored as a 2021-22 CAA Academic Excellence Award recipient, which recognizes the team within each sport of the CAA with the highest collective grade point average. Along with that incredible honor, Elon was recognized by The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an all-academic team.
Maria Ahm,
Leandra Lorenz and
Kaitlin McGoogan were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 as well as qualifying for the NCAA East Region Preliminary.
MAKING A GLOBAL IMPACT
Over Thanksgiving Break 2022, the Elon women's track & field and cross country team spent a week in Greece as part of Elon's commitment to diversity and global engagement. The team spent time exploring the country, visiting places like Olympia (the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games) and learning history. More information about the trip can be viewed by
