Women’s Tennis Hosts Jimmy Powell Invitational Friday, Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team closes out its fall season by hosting the Jimmy Powell Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Phoenix will host the event at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. 
 
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • Play will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by a round of singles at 10 a.m. There will be an additional round of singles in the afternoon.
  • Saturday will feature two rounds of doubles in the morning and a round of singles in the afternoon. 
  • Live scoring will not be available for the tournament. 
  • Other teams participating in the event are Coastal Carolina, Connecticut and UNC Asheville. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon last competed at ITA Carolina Regionals on Oct. 19-22 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • Lizette Reding became Elon's first ever player to reach the quarterfinals of the main singles draw at the event. Reding got into the draw as a lucky loser before advancing through two rounds. 
  • Reding and Sibel Tanik also reached the quarterfinals in the main doubles draw. The tandem took out the No. 6 seed in the draw to reach the final eight. 
  • Helen Sarikulaya won a pair of matches in the singles qualifying draw to reach the main draw. 
  • Ella Suk won a pair of singles matches on the week (one in the qualifying draw, one in an additional match), while fellow freshman Simone Bergeron also picked up a singles win in an additional match. 
 
LAST YEAR AT JIMMY POWELL INVITATIONAL
  • The Phoenix went 18-0 in singles and 8-3 in doubles at last year's Jimmy Powell Invitational.
  • Sibel Tanik earned singles champion honors, as the senior won all three of her singles matches to finish the event with 12 points.
  • Tanik also earned champion honors in doubles with partner Lizette Reding. The tandem went 2-1 in the event, earning eight points to narrowly beat out the Navy team of Jillian Taggart and Sia Chaudry, who earned seven. 
  • Helen Sarikulaya joined Tanik as the only players in the tournament to finish the week with a perfect 6-0 record in singles sets. 
  • Madison Cordisco and Reding also went 3-0 for the week in singles, with Olivia Archer and Julie Ball also going 2-0. 
  • Cordisco and Sarikulaya teamed up for a 3-0 weekend in doubles. Tanik and Reding also won two doubles contests, as did Archer and Ball. 
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a 16-7 season that included a trip to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. 
  • The Phoenix returns five players from last year's squad, headlined by Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding, who both earned All-CAA honors in both singles and doubles last season. Tanik and Reding formed a dynamic doubles duo, going 12-6 in the No. 1 position last season and also combined to win 24 singles contests in the top three spots. 
  • Also returning for the Phoenix are sophomores Helen Sarikulaya and Madison Cordisco. Sarikulaya won 12 doubles and 11 singles matches last season and earned two CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors. Cordisco also reached double-digit wins in doubles, earning 11 victories playing the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. 
  • Miray Konar is also back for her second season with the Phoenix. Konar went 8-1 in 2022 playing Nos. 5 and 6 singles and added nine doubles victories. 
  • New to the Phoenix this season are freshmen Simone Bergeron, Ella Suk and Mariana Reding, the younger sister of Lizette Reding
  • Elon is led by head coach Elizabeth Anderson, who is in her 20th season with the program.
