Elon Baseball Opens 2023 Season By Hosting Kentucky

Elon, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team opens the 2023 season this weekend by hosting Kentucky for a three-game set. First pitch for Friday's season-opener is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. first pitch Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. start time Sunday.
 
HOW TO FOLLOW
  • Live stats will be available for all three games of the series, while the first two games will be broadcast on FloSports with a paid subscription. Sunday's game will have an audio only stream.

LAST SEASON
  • Elon went 27-28 a year ago, including a 9-14 record in the Colonial Athletic Association.
  • The Phoenix hosted the CAA Tournament and the Elon won a pair of games. After losing to No. 3 seed Hofstra 5-4, the Phoenix beat William & Mary 6-3 and UNCW 13-3. Eventually top-seeded College of Charleston knocked Elon out of the tournament with a 6-1 defeat.
 
SEASON OPENERS
  • Elon is 7-3 in its last 10 season openers but is coming off of a 6-3 loss last year to Fairfield.
  • In season openers that double as home openers, Elon is also 7-3 in its last 10.
 
THE SERIES
  • Elon and Kentucky have played just one time, meeting in a single game during the 2013 season.
  • That game came at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach and then-No. 8 Kentucky won the game 6-1, putting up a five-spot in the fourth inning and holding on.
 
ABOUT KENTUCKY
  • Kentucky went 33-26 a year ago and made a run to the SEC Tournament semifinal.
  • The Wildcats went 12-18 in the SEC but started 2022 by winning their first seven games.
  • Kentucky outfielder Kendal Ewell was named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, given to the top amateur player in baseball.
 
PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
  • Elon pitcher Shea Sprague and outfielder/catcher Luke Stephenson were named to the preseason All-CAA team.
  • Sprague was one of five pitchers named to the team, while Stephenson earned the designated hitter nod on the team.
  • Sprague ranked in the top 76 nationally in ERA, WHIP, walks allowed per nine innings and hits allowed per nine innings a year ago. He was the CAA Co-Rookie of the Year in 2022.
  • Stephenson led the CAA with 15 home runs a year ago and ranked in the top seven in the CAA in total bases, slugging percentage and RBI.
