Women’s Tennis Closes Homestand with Tuesday Doubleheader in Greensboro

ELON, N.C. – Winners of its last four matches, the Elon University women's tennis team (9-3) wraps up its season-long six-match homestand on Tuesday when it faces Morgan State (2-5) and Shaw (2-1) in Greensboro. The matches will be played at the Simkins Indoor Tennis Center. 
 
COVERAGE
  • The match against Morgan State will begin at 10 a.m. with doubles and will conclude with singles shortly after. 
  • The match against Shaw will begin at 1:30 p.m. with doubles and will conclude with singles shortly after.
  • Live stats will not be available for either match.

 SERIES HISTORY VS. MORGAN STATE, SHAW
  • Elon leads the all-time ledger against Morgan State 2-0. The Phoenix defeated the Bears 6-1 in their last meeting on March 13, 2022. 
  • Tuesday will be the first ever match between Elon and Shaw.
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong season in 2022 in which it went 17-9 and finished as the runner-up at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
  • The returnees include graduate Olivia Archer (All-CAA third team in singles); seniors Julie BallShauna Galvin and Sibel Tanik (All-CAA first team in singles and second team in doubles) and junior Lizette Reding (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles). 
  • The Phoenix also welcomes three newcomers in sophomore Miray Konar — a transfer from Western Carolina — and freshmen Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya. Konar, from Izmir, Turkey, went 7-5 in singles and 10-6 in doubles while playing primarily in the No. 2 spot for the Catamounts last season. A Pittsburgh native, Cordisco was considered a five-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net. Sarikulaya, from Rockville, Md., was also a five-star recruit and reached as high as No. 7 in the USTA Girls' 18 national standings.
  • Elon is led by head coach Elizabeth Anderson, who is in her 19th season at the helm.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon defeated Davidson 6-1 on March 11 for its fourth consecutive win, which improved the team's home record to 6-0 on the season. 
  • Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Doubles Team of the Week Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding posted Elon's first win of the day with a 6-0 result at No. 1 doubles.
  • After Davidson won No. 3 doubles, Julie Ball and Madison Cordisco clinched the doubles point for the Phoenix with a comeback 6-3 win on Court 2. The pair is 3-1 on the season at the No. 2 spot. 
  • Olivia Archer extended her singles winning streak to six straight matches, as she won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot against Davidson's Franny Shea.
  • Madison Cordisco delivered her third career singles win on Court 2 with a 6-1, 6-4 result against Emma Heiderscheit to make it 3-0 Elon. All of Cordisco's wins this season have come at the No. 2 spot. 
  • With a 6-3, 6-3 win against Josie Schaffer on Court 1, Sibel Tanik clinched the match for Elon.
  • Lizette Reding and Helen Sarikulaya tacked on match tiebreak victories to bring the final score to 6-1. 
  • The win extended Elon's home-winning streak to six matches. Five of the wins have come at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. 
  • Elon is 48-18 in singles matches this season and holds a winning record at all six singles spots. 
  • The Phoenix has won the doubles point in four consecutive matches, its longest streak of the season. 
 
ARCHER'S ASCENT 
  • Olivia Archer's singles victory against Davidson on Saturday was the 64th of her career. Archer, who is in her fifth season, has the second-most career singles wins in Elon's Division I history. 
  • Archer needs four more singles wins to tie Frida Jansaker's (2011-14) all-time Division I Elon record with 68. 
  • After posting 19 singles wins in 2022, tied for the third most in a single season in Elon's Division I history, Archer is off to a 9-2 start in 2023 and leads the team in victories. 
 
TANIK ON A TEAR
  • Senior Sibel Tanik holds a 22-9 record in the last two seasons at the No. 1 singles position. Tanik's eight singles wins this season are tied for the second on the team behind Olivia Archer.
  • Dating back to last season, the senior has won 18 of her last 23 completed singles matches, all in the No. 1 spot. 
  • Of Tanik's 22 singles victories the last two seasons, 17 have come in straight sets. 
  • All of Tanik's 31 singles appearances the last two seasons have come in the No. 1 position. 
  • Tanik's has been named CAA Player of the Week twice this season. The first was on Feb. 1 and the most recent on Feb. 14. 
 
SARIKULAYA STARRING
  • In Elon's last 11 contests, freshman Helen Sarikulaya has eight victories in singles and six in doubles. 
  • Three of Sarikulaya's doubles victories this season have come with fellow freshman Madison Cordisco. The other three have been with Miray Konar.
  • Sarikulaya is 4-0 this season at No. 3 singles. The freshman clinched wins for the Phoenix against Campbell and UNC Greensboro with a victory in the No. 3 position.   
  • Four of Sarikulaya's eight singles victories have come in a deciding set. The freshman is 4-2 in final sets this season. 
 
KONAR CONTRIBUTING
  • Sophomore Miray Konar is off to a 6-0 start in singles this season for the Phoenix. Two of the wins have come at the No. 5 spot and the other four were at No. 6. 
  • After winning her first two matches of the season in a final set, Konar has reeled off eight consecutive set wins without losing more than three games in any of them. 
  • Konar is also 3-2 playing No. 3 doubles this season with partner Helen Sarikulaya. The tandem won CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 25.
 
DYNAMIC DUO
  • During Elon's four-match winning streak, Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding are 4-0 playing No. 1 doubles. The pair has won 24 of 25 games in those victories. 
  • For the second time this season, Tanik and Reding were tabbed as the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on March 7.
  • Tanik and Reding previously won CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 8. 
  • The tandem is 7-3 at the No. 1 position this season and has won seven of its eight seven completed matches. 
 
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE
  • The Bears are currently 2-5 on the season and 0-5 away from home. 
  • Morgan State defeated Le Moyne College 4-0 in its most recent contest on March 4. 
  • The Bears are led by head coach Matthew Townes. 
 
SCOUTING SHAW
  • Shaw enters with a 2-1 record on the season and a 1-1 record in road contests. 
  • The Bears won their most recent match 4-0 against Johnson C. Smith on March 11. 
 
UP NEXT
Elon plays its first road match since Feb. 25 when it travels to take on UNCW on March 16 at 2 p.m.
