RICHMOND, Va. – After being named the most outstanding player of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament last week, junior
Daniel Martin has been selected as the league's Player of the Year as the CAA announced its postseason awards on Friday.
Martin is the third Elon player to take home the award as he joins Stefan Fortmann (2011-15), who earned the honor in 2015, and
Felipe Sarrasague (2015-19), who won it in both 2018 and 2019. This is the second time Elon has won CAA Player of the Year and CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in the same season, as Sarrasague and
Kyle Frankel (2017-22) achieved the feat in 2019.
Martin was also named to the All-CAA First Team for singles after posting an 18-6 record with all 18 wins coming at the No. 1 spot. The Letchworth, England, native won his final six singles contests, four of which came against conference opponents. Martin won CAA matches against Hampton, College of Charleston, two against Delaware, North Carolina A&T, Monmouth and UNC Wilmington. He also won a singles match against No. 35 North Carolina State on Feb. 26 and was named CAA Player of the Week after the victory.
Veljko Krstic became the first Elon player to win CAA Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-CAA Second Team. The Belgrade, Serbia, native went 16-4 in singles this season with 15 of the wins coming at the No. 3 position. Krtsic won conference matches against Hampton, College of Charleston, Delaware, William & Mary, North Carolina A&T and Monmouth. Krstic also clinched a dramatic 4-3 victory over Campbell on Feb. 7 with a win at No. 3 singles and won 13 of his matches in straight sets.
Nicholas Campbell joined Martin on the All-CAA Singles First Team as he made an all-conference team for the second straight season. Campbell went 12-10 in singles on the season which included conference wins over Hampton, College of Charleston, Delaware and Monmouth. In addition to his CAA victories, the senior also picked up a win at the No. 2 spot against No. 35 North Carolina State on Feb. 26. Campbell and Martin have both made an All-CAA team for singles each of the last two seasons.
Campbell and Martin also both made the All-CAA First Team for doubles. Martin went 11-7 in doubles on the season, winning matches with three different partners. Six of the victories came with Campbell, who went 8-7 on the campaign in doubles. When paired together, Campbell and Martin won CAA matches against Hampton, College of Charleston, Delaware and Monmouth.
The tandem of
Nicholas Condos and
Ben Zipay rounded out Elon's postseason awards as the duo was selected to the All-CAA Third Team for doubles. Playing primarily at the No. 3 spot, Condos and Zipay went 12-4 together on the season in doubles and were Elon's winningest team. They won conference matches against Hampton, Delaware, William & Mary and North Carolina A&T and earned two CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors.
