Elon Earns Runner-Up Finish At CAA Indoor Track & Field Championship

New York, N.Y. – The Elon University track & field team broke three school records Friday and medaled five times to earn a second place finish at the 2024 CAA Indoor Track & Field Championship at the famed Armory in New York City.

Entering the CAA Championships projected to finish fifth according to the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings, Elon set personal bests and shattered expectations throughout the two days of the event.

DAY ONE RECAP

SCHOOL RECORDS AND RUNNER-UPS
  • Elon set three school records Friday, finishing as CAA runner-up in each of those events. Jette Beermann broke two records and Piper Jons added the third, following up on back-to-back days with a school record.
  • Beermann ran the fastest times in school history in both the mile (4:42.21) and the 3,000 (9:25.74), earning 16 points for the Phoenix between the two events. In the 3,000, she broke her own school record by more than eight seconds.
  • By the slimmest of margins, Jons broke her own school record in the 400, running 54.27. She finished in second, just .02 seconds from a CAA title and only .01 seconds ahead of her previous personal best.

OTHER SCORING EFFORTS
  • In the triple jump, Linn Hertz Saebboe posted the second-best performance in program history, finishing third overall with a leap of 39-feet-11.5 (12.18m).
  • Elon's 3200 relay team also earned a bronze medal, finishing third in 9:05.19. Arianna Sakoutis, Emily Alps, Sarah Petitjean and Alison Hodgson ran the fourth-fastest time in school history.
  • In the mile, Anna Twomey finished fourth in 4:51.95, a time that ranks fourth in program history.
  • In the 200, Piper Jons placed sixth with a time of 24.16 seconds, just shy of the school record time of 24.13 she set a day earlier to qualify for finals.
  • Hannah Schonhoff cleared 5-7 (1.70m) in the high jump, to end sixth. That was a new indoor PR for her, tying her for second in school history. It ties her collegiate personal best, indoor or outdoor.
  • Stavriana Adamou was seventh in the 60 hurdles with a PR time of 8.66 seconds. That time ranks third in Elon history.
  • Maggie Springer ran the 3,000 in 9:38.51 to place seventh overall. The PR places her fourth in school history in the event.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • Katie Blount finished ninth in the 3,000 with a PR time of 9:41.27. That ranks sixth in school history.
  • In the mile, Quinn Smith recorded a PR with a time of 4:58.31 to finish ninth.

FROM HEAD COACH MARK ELLISTON
"To see them come together like they did, to compete, to never give up, that was so amazing. When you look at the lists, we were fourth or fifth. But this group rose to the occasion.

"I think finishing second this weekend and hosting the outdoor conference championship will fire them up. In outdoor, we pick up a few events that are some of our strengths. Outdoor is lining up a little better for us, but a meet is a meet and you've got to come through on the day. Wanting to avenge second place may be on their hearts."

UP NEXT
  • Elon will transition to the outdoor season, beginning March 22 at home for the Phoenix Invitational.
  • Following the regular season, Elon will host the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship May 10-11 at Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex on the campus of Elon University.
