Phoenix Drops Friday Opener To Campbell

Box Score Elon, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (10-15, 0-4 CAA) fell behind the Campbell Fighting Camels (18-7, 2-2 CAA) and could not make up the deficit in a 13-1 loss Friday night.
 
Kenny Mallory Jr. registered his 11th multi-hit game of the year in the loss to Campbell while the Phoenix pitching staff struck out ten batters.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Campbell got to Justin Mitrovich early with three runs in the top of the first with two of them being unearned.
  • Mitrovich retired the Camels in order in the second inning on just five pitches to give some life to the Phoenix.
  • The Elon bats answered the call in the bottom of the second striking for one run on two hits in part due to a Justin Szestowicki double and a James Broderick RBI single.
  • The Camels answered in the fourth and fifth inning with five combined runs to pull in front 8-1.
  • Campbell put together a five-run seventh inning to put the game beyond all doubt going into the final two frames.
  • Carson Wehner and Trey Tiffan put together scoreless frames out of the bullpen, but the Elon bats remained quiet with the final score being 13-1.
 
NOTES AND STATS
  • Justin Mitrovich made his seventh Friday night start of the season.
  • Mitrovich put together a seven-strikeout performance which now gives him 57 on the season.
  • Kenny Mallory Jr. put together a multi-hit performance for the Phoenix. Mallory's two singles led the way for the Phoenix attack.
  • Justin Szestowicki struck with a double in the second inning. This was Szestowicki's fourth double of the season.
  • Troy McGirt and Joe Yovino finished with pinch hits against Campbell.
  • Will Vergantino and Alex Duffey added singles to the hit total.
  • Trey Tiffan threw an inning of work out of the bullpen. Tiffan struck out the first batter of his Elon career and did not allow a hit.

  • Elon returns to Latham Park tomorrow evening for a 4 pm start with Campbell in game two.
