Elon, N.C. – It didn't take long for the Elon track & field team to stamp its mark on the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship – just about 35 minutes. That's how long it took for
Jette Beermann and the Elon distance team to send a maroon and gold storm through the rest of the conference. Beermann won the first event of the day, the 10,000-meter run, and Elon placed five of the top eight finishers Friday morning.
The Phoenix scored 23 points in that first event and it lifted Elon to second place after day one of the CAA Tournament, held at home in Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track & Field Complex. Northeastern leads the way with 47 points, followed by Elon with 41 and William & Mary with 36.5.
Day two action will begin at 9:30 am Saturday, which includes finals in many of the events on the track.
BEERMANN AND THE GANG OF 10,000
- While Jette Beermann is Elon's school record holder in both the 1,500 and the 5,000, she had never run the 10,000 in competition before Friday. But Beermann proved she has the ability to extend her endurance. She sat comfortably in second place for much of the race and then ran away from the field over the final 600 meters to earn gold with a time of 35:53.59. Her time ranks eighth in program history.
- Teammate Katie Blount also earned a podium spot, placing third in 35:58.51. Maggie Springer was fifth in 36:06.39 and Madison Synowiec finished seventh in 36:20.49. Freshman Hannah Weber ran 36:23.50 to capture the final scoring spot in eighth place. For good measure, Jasmine Young was 10th in 36:43.23.
OTHER POINT-SCORING PERFORMANCES
- Hannah Miller as Elon's only other podium performer Friday. She placed third in the last event of the day, the steeplechase, with a time of 10:22.51. Teammate Hattie Reynolds was seventh in 10:46.82.
- Elon placed two of the top seven in javelin. Grace Dieleman was fifth with a distance of 129-feet-0.75 (39.34m) and Jaqueline Zacharias placed seventh at 116-11.5 (35.65m).
- Kaitlin McGoogan earned a fifth place finish in hammer throw, recording a distance of 179-5 (54.69m).
SURVIVE AND ADVANCE
- Many of the events on the track were prelims with runners looking to qualify for Saturday's finals.
- Piper Jons qualified for finals in both the 200 and 400. She broke her own school record in the 200 with a time of 23.81 seconds and she ran 54.52 in the 400, the second-fastest time of the day.
- Anna Twomey also qualified for finals in two events, doing so in the 800 and 1500. She ran 2:11.57 in the 800 and 4:42.06 in the 1500, finishing sixth in both.
- In the 100 hurdles, Isabella Hildtich grabbed the last qualifying spot in 14.26 seconds.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Meghan Wilcox ran a season-best 11.91 in the 100.
- Stavriana Adamou had a personal best time of 14.40 seconds in the 100 hurdles, tied for ninth-fastest in program history.
- Alexa Mark set her outdoor PR in long jump, tying her indoor PR, with a mark of 18-8.25 (5.70m). That distance ranks seventh in school history.
- Lizzie Lopez set a new PR in the high jump during heptathlon competition, clearing 5-4 (1.63m). Lopez also set an outdoor PR in shot put at 25-1.5 (7.66m).
