BURLINGTON – Senior men's golfer
Landon Durham shot a second-round 8-under-par 63 to highlight an impressive second round effort by Elon at the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Monday. The Phoenix ended the first 36 holes in solo second place at 18-under 550 (282-268), trailing CAA counterpart UNCW (-21) by three strokes.
Durham was at his best Monday afternoon; his 63 was a career-low 18-hole score and fell one stroke shy of tying Elon's low 18-hole score record (62). The Ponde Vedra Beach, Florida, native – who carded a 1-under 70 in the first round – started the second round 6-under through six holes and remained bogey free throughout the round. An eagle on hole 6 capped the blistering start. Durham (-9) is tied for the clubhouse lead with Gardner-Webb's Jack Boyer while five other golfers are within three strokes.
It was a full-team effort for the Phoenix during the second round. Four other Phoenix –
Jack Wieler (68),
Drew Yeagley (68) and
William Carr (69) were under par in the second round and sit among the top 25 individually after two rounds played. Carr tallied his third and fourth straight under-par rounds with back-to-back 68s to finish Monday tied for fifth, just three shots behind Durham.
Nine total Phoenix are in action at the 10th annual Elon Phoenix Invitational. Elon has won its home tournament five times, most recently in 2023. Longwood (-6), Charleston Southern (-4) and Queens (-4) round out the top five teams after 36 holes.
