RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University men's soccer junior
Charlie Kitch was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as the conference unveiled its weekly awards.
Kitch netted the game-winning goal for Elon against UNCW on Saturday with exactly four minutes remaining. After
Martin Kozak sent a corner kick into the box, Kitch headed it out of the air toward the far post to beat UNCW's goalkeeper. It was the third goal of his career and his first of the season.
Against No. 7 Duke on Tuesday, Kitch logged the full 90 minutes as the Phoenix battled the Blue Devils to a 1-1 draw in Durham. Kitch helped anchor a backline that limited the nation's top scoring offense entering the contest to two goals fewer than its season average (3.2) and just six shots on goal.
The honor is the defender's first CAA weekly award. This is the third time an Elon player has earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week this season, as goalkeeper
Jackson Leavitt won the honor in consecutive weeks on Sept. 1 and 8.
Kitch and the Phoenix continue conference play Saturday at College of Charleston. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
