ESTERO, Fla. – Freshman
William Carr is two shots off the individual lead and one of three Phoenix among the top 20 individually after 36 holes played at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational. Carr's 36-hole effort highlighted a strong opening day in the Sunshine State for the Elon men's golf team, which is in sole possession of fifth place at 15-under-par (283-278 – 561) with one round remaining.
Carr was masterful on Monday, shooting 68-67 for a 9-under 135 through two rounds played. The Phoenix rookie is tied for fifth place individually but sits behind co-leaders Vaughn McMeans (-11) of George Mason and Tom Scullion (-11) of FGCU after tallied 12 birdies to just three bogeys across his first 36 holes played at West Bay Golf Club.
Elon trails tournament host FGCU (-30) by 15 strokes but sits just five shots behind second place George Mason (-20) with one round to go. Stetson (-18) and Eastern Michigan (-16) are in third and fourth place heading into Tuesday.
Carr, who started both the first and second rounds on hole 11, was just about perfect on the front nine with eight birdies and no bogeys on holes 1-9. His second-round 67 tied his collegiate-low 18-hole score, which he first accomplished in his collegiate debut at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate in September.
The best Phoenix round of the day belonged to junior
Jack Wieler, who tied his collegiate-low 18-hole score of 66 in the second round. Wieler carded an opening round 74 but climbed 29 spots into a tie for 14th with the second-round 66; he shot a back-nine 32 with four birdies and wedged another four birdies – on holes 2, 3, 5 and 6 – in between front-nine bogeys on 1 and 8.
Drew Yeagley's steady start to his collegiate career continued Monday with a 2-under 142 (70-72). The freshman – who carded one of two eagles by Elon on hole 6 in the first round – is tied for 20th and in strong position to earn his third consecutive top 25 start to begin his rookie year.
