CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Elon men's basketball team fell 99-72 to Miami on Thursday night at Watsco Center.
Â
Elon (3-2) shot 51% from the field and went 10-of-21 from 3-point range, but Miami (4-1) countered with 54.4% shooting overall and a 38-22 advantage on the glass. The Hurricanes also turned 18 Elon turnovers into 25 points.
Â
Randall Pettus II led the Phoenix with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including four 3-pointers, while
Chandler Cuthrell added 15 points and four rebounds.
Bryson Cokley was a boost off the bench once again with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and a team-high six rebounds.
Ja'Juan Carr finished with 12 points and a team-leading five assists.
Â
Miami opened strong, building a double-digit lead midway through the first half before Elon responded with a steady offensive stretch. Cokley, Pettus II, and Cuthrell combined for several key baskets as the Phoenix shot 61.5% in the opening period and knocked down seven threes. Elon trimmed the margin to 48-41 heading into halftime.
Â
The Hurricanes, however, took control early in the second half, putting together an 11-0 run to push the lead into double digits for good. Miami outscored Elon 51-31 after the break, fueled by 17 fast-break points and 54 total points in the paint, 26 of which came in the second half.
Â
Miami featured four players in double figures, led by Malik Reneau's 19 points and 18-point performances from both Tre Donaldson and Tru Washington, with Washington also adding a game-high 10 rebounds. Shelton Henderson totaled 16 points and four steals.
Â
Elon's bench contributed 21 points, and the Phoenix continued their strong perimeter shooting early in the season, but Miami's size and transition play proved too much to overcome.
