Elon Returns Home To Face No. 10 Rhode Island

Phoenix Looks To Snap Three-Game Skid

ELON – The Elon football team returns to action after its bye week this Saturday to host No. 10/14 Rhode Island at Rhodes Stadium. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. ET.

The Phoenix (4-5, 2-3 CAA) looks to return to .500 in conference play with what would be a fifth win in the last six tries against the Rams (7-2, 5-0).

GAME INFORMATION

SETTING THE STAGE
  • Saturday's matchup will be the seventh all-time meeting between Elon and Rhode Island, and the first meeting between the two since 2022. The Phoenix and Rams did not meet until Elon joined the CAA in 2014.
  • The Phoenix leads the all-time series against Rhode Island, 4-2. Elon has won four of the last five games in the series dating back to 2017.
  • The Rams are coming off a bye week of their own and enter the matchup with three straight wins. During its three-game winning streak dating back to Oct. 11, Rhode Island is averaging just under 45 points per game (44.6).
  • Rhode Island enters the matchup ahead of the Phoenix in the CAA standings at 5-0. In league play, the Rams have scored at least 31 points in every contest so far.
  • Jim Fleming is in his 12th season as the head coach at Rhode Island. Stevens has a record of 55-72 as the head coach of the Rams.

HIGHWAY TO THE RED ZONE
  • The Elon offensive and defensive units have made their presence known inside the red zone all season long. The Phoenix ranks first in the CAA in both red zone offense and red zone defense entering the matchup with Rhode Island.
  • The Phoenix has offensively scored points on 30-of-33 red zone trips (90.9%). In CAA play, the percentage gets higher with Elon scoring on 14-of-15 (93.3%) red zone opportunities. Over the past two games, reaching inside the 20-yard line meant seven points; Elon has scored a touchdown on three straight red zone trips dating back to the final drive against Villanova on Oct. 11.
  • The Phoenix defense has bent but not broken inside the red zone, having been backed up inside the red zone 27 times while holding offenses scoreless on seven different occasions. The red zone defense percentage of 20-for-27 (74.1%) is tops in the CAA.

GROUND AND POUND
  • The Phoenix ground attack has provided a punch so far this season with the trio of running backs Jimmyll Williams and TJ Thomas Jr. and quarterback Landen Clark have all had their say when running the ball.
  • Clark had his best rushing day as a Phoenix three weeks ago against William & Mary on Oct. 18, tallying 83 yards and a rushing score in the loss.
  • Williams had a career day with 172 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries in the Sept. 27 win against Hampton; the back was named CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week following the performance. Williams has amassed 538 yards on the ground – the eighth most in the CAA – on 66 carries while his 8.2 yards per carry average is the best in the conference.
  • Thomas has had a knack for finding the end zone, scoring touchdowns in Elon's first three CAA contests this season, including multi-score efforts against both Hampton and Villanova.
  • Thomas will look to get back in the end zone for the first time since Oct. 11; his next rushing touchdown will put him among Elon's top 10 all-time for rushing scores in the school's FCS era.
  • Clark (seven rushing touchdowns) and Thomas (six) are both top 10 players in the CAA in the category. Clark's seven rushing scores are the most by a quarterback in the league.
