SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Elon men's basketball returned to the win column in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, rolling past Wofford 73-52 at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Phoenix (5-4) snapped a two-game skid, secured its first road win over the Terriers since 2008 and halted Wofford's streak of 20 consecutive home nonconference victories.
Â
Elon set the tone immediately with a dominant first half, racing out to a 50-15 lead behind 58.1% shooting and eight made threes.
Chandler Cuthrell led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while
Kacper Klaczek added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Bryson Cokley and
Randall Pettus II chipped in 12 points apiece as six Phoenix scored at least six.
Â
Elon set the tone immediately with an 8-0 run to open the game.
Randall Pettus II drilled a three on the Phoenix's first made field goal, and
Bryson Cokley followed with a transition triple off a
Ja'Juan Carr assist.
Chandler Cuthrell then threw down a two-handed dunk to make it 10-2 and force an early Wofford timeout.
Â
Midway through the half, Elon blew the game open with a burst powered by Cuthrell. He knocked down a three off a
Ned Hull feed, then converted a fast-break layup off a Carr steal before
Isaac Harrell buried a trailing three to push the lead to 24-7. The run grew to 29-8 moments later when Harrell finished inside off a Klaczek setup.
Â
Elon's defense strung together stops during a sequence in which the Phoenix forced three turnovers in a four-possession span.
DeMarco Johnson jumped a passing lane, leading to a Cuthrell corner three, and on the next trip Pettus picked off a pass and drilled a right-wing triple to extend the lead to 34-8.
Â
The Phoenix controlled the glass 40-28, outscored the Terriers 34-22 in the paint and held Wofford to 18% shooting in the opening period. Wofford (6-4) never led and did not score its second field goal until nearly seven minutes remained in the first half.
