Alumnus Becomes First Phoenix To Reach U.S. Amateur Match Play

SAN FRANCISCO – Elon University men's golf standout and alumnus Garrett Risner delivered a standout performance at the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club this week, becoming the first Phoenix to advance through stroke play at the prestigious event. He ultimately fell short with a 2UP loss in a Round of 64 match on Wednesday.

Risner – an All-CAA and PING All-East Region golfer for the Phoenix in the 2024-25 season – shot a 1-under 139 over two stroke-play rounds at Olympic Club's Lake and Ocean courses, carding rounds of 71 and 68 to secure his place in the match-play bracket. He finished stroke play tied for eighth place.

Risner faced former Virginia standout Paul Chang in the Round of 64. Though he took an early lead by winning the third hole to go 1-up, Chang responded swiftly with a birdie on the fourth to square the match. The two battled through the front nine, but Chang pulled away late – carding back-to-back birdies on the final two holes – to close the day 2UP and eliminate Risner.

Risner, a native of Holly Springs, graduated from Elon this past spring.
