Elon Heads To Queen City To Face Queens

ELON – Fresh off a thrilling home win Sunday night, the Elon University women's soccer team (2-0-1) heads south Thursday for a matchup against Queens (0-1-2) in Charlotte. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Queens Series 
  • Elon is 4-1 all-time against Queens and has won the only meeting between the teams since becoming a Division I program.
  • The Phoenix and Royals played last season at Rudd Field, with Elon winning 1-0. 
  • Isa Murdock scored the game's only goal in the 71st minute on an assist from Jessica Hill. Katie Bisgrove recorded a shutout in goal for the Phoenix.   
 
Last Time Out 
  • Elon defeated Gardner-Webb at Rudd Field on Sunday thanks to more of Murdock's late-game heroics.
  • For the second straight season, Murdock scored the game-winning tally against the Runnin' Bulldogs, both of which have come in the final six minutes. 
  • On Sunday, Murdock scored the lone goal of Elon's 1-0 victory in the 86th minute. Following a corner kick sent in by Grace Gelhaus, Murdock headed the ball past Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Savannah Dixon to break the scoreless tie.
  • Elon outshot Gardner-Webb, 22-6, on the night, with Murdock accounting for seven of those attempts. Of Elon's 22 shots, 11 were on target.
  • Bisgrove posted her second consecutive shutout in goal for the Phoenix.  
 
Preseason Accolades 
  • Elon was picked to finish first in the new CAA South Division, as the conference unveiled its preseason polls on Aug 11. The Phoenix received nine of 12 first place votes and garnered 63 total points in the vote by the league's head coaches. 
  • The Phoenix also had three players earn Preseason All-CAA recognition. Junior defender Grace Gelhaus and sophomore goalkeeper Katie Bisgrove earned a spot on the Preseason All-CAA Team while junior midfielder Gabby Hoschek was tabbed a Preseason All-CAA honorable mention. 
  • Gelhaus was an All-CAA First Team selection a season ago after making 16 starts in 18 appearances for the Phoenix. She led Elon's defenders in goals (2), assists (3) and points (7) while logging the full 90 minutes on seven occasions. In Elon's CAA quarterfinal victory over College of Charleston, Gelhaus assisted on Elon's opening goal and notched the game-winning tally in the final five minutes to lift the Phoenix to a 2-1 victory.  
  • Bisgrove earned All-CAA Rookie Team honors as a freshman in 2024. She made 15 starts in net for the Phoenix, delivering 10 victories, the second most by an Elon freshman in the program's Division I tenure. Bisgrove secured 66 saves in her rookie campaign and had 5.5 shutouts, one of just 15 Division I freshmen to register five or more clean sheets last season. She took home CAA Rookie of the Week on Sept. 23 following a five-save outing in a 2-1 victory over Northeastern.  
  • Hoschek appeared in all 18 contests for Elon is 2024 on her way to earning All-CAA Second Team recognition. She totaled four goals, three assists and 11 points a season ago, with four of those points (1g, 2a) coming in Elon's 4-2 triumph at Wofford. The midfielder also netted goals against Gardner-Webb, Northeastern and Hofstra.  
 
Clean Sheets 
  • Elon has posted back-to-back clean sheets against VMI and Gardner-Webb. Bisgrove has started both contests in goal for the Phoenix. 
  • The only goal Elon has allowed this season came in the second half of its season opener at VCU. The Phoenix is yet to concede a goal at Rudd. 
  • In its two victories, Elon has outshot its opponents, 48-10. Of the 10 shots attempted by opponents, only two have required a Bisgrove save.  
  • With the consecutive clean sheets, Bisgrove is up to 7.5 career shutouts.  
  • Hill has played all 270 minutes for the Phoenix to anchor the backline this season. 
 
Murdock's Hot Start 
  • Murdock is tied with Gelhaus for a team-high two goals on the season. Her 15 shot attempts are seven more than any other Phoenix player through the first three games.  
  • She scored Elon's first goal of the season in the season opener at VCU, connecting from just outside the box after dribbling the ball from midfield.  
  • Against Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Murdock led the Phoenix with seven shot attempts and six shots on goal. She has led Elon in shot attempts in all three games this season.  
  • Murdock's goal against the Runnin' Bulldogs was the 10th of her career, as she joined Ashlee Brehio as current Elon players with double-digit career goals as a Phoenix.   
 
GG  
  • Gelhaus, a preseason All-CAA selection, is tied with Murdock for the team lead in points (5) this season. She has almost matched her season total of seven points from a season ago in Elon's first three games.  
  • The junior scored two goals in a 21-second span in Elon's 4-0 victory over VMI on Aug. 17. She also assisted on Murdock's game-winning tally against Gardner-Webb on Sunday.  
  • Gelhaus is also second on the team with eight shots, five of which have been on target. She has logged the fifth most minutes for the Phoenix this season (223).  
 
New Look CAA Soccer 
  • Starting in 2025, the CAA will feature two divisions for women's soccer – a North and South Division.  
  • Elon is part of the South Division alongside Campbell, College of Charleston, Hampton, UNCW and William & Mary.  
  • The Phoenix will face all five South Division teams in the regular season along with four teams from the North Division.  
  • At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each division will qualify for the CAA Championship. The top seed in each division will receive a by to the semifinals while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in both the North and South will clash in the quarterfinals.  
 
Non-Conference Streak 
  • Elon enters Thursday riding a nine-game unbeaten streak versus nonconference opponents, which started last season. 
  • During that stretch, Elon has outscored its opponents, 16-5, which includes five clean sheets. 
  • The nine results have come against eight different opponents. Five have come at Rudd with other four coming on the road. 
  • Elon's last loss to a non-conference foe came on Aug. 31, 2023, when the Phoenix fell at No. 12/13 South Carolina.  
 
Road Warriors 
  • Three of Elon's first five games this season are on the road. Elon enters Thursday with a 0-0-1 mark on the road following a season-opening draw at VCU. 
  • The Phoenix will hope to build on a successful road slate from a season ago, as Elon went 6-3 in true road contests in 2024.
  • The six victories included triumphs over CAA foes Drexel, Northeastern and UNCW. Elon also picked up impressive non-conference road victories at Gardner-Webb, UNCG and Wofford.  
  • Elon scored two-plus goals in five of its nine road matches in 2024.  
  • The six road victories were the most in a season for Elon since notched seven in 2017. 
 
Scouting Queens  
  • Queens enters Thursday's contest with an 0-1-2 record this season. 
  • The Royals are coming off a 3-2 loss at the hands of Miami (Ohio) last week following draws against Gardner-Webb and Campbell.   
  • Helena Merkle has scored two of Queens' three goals this season, with Sejla Podzic scoring the other. Merkle also has an assist and leads the team with five points.  
  • Merkle has scored on both of her shot attempts this season. Shion Hwang leads the Royals with seven shots and Grace Acevado is second with four attempts.  
  • In goal, Hannah Dike-Lawlor has started the last two games after Kelsey Jargstorf started the season opener versus Campbell. Dike-Lawlor has made 12 saves in 225 minutes of action.  
  • Shannon Neely Noel is in her third season as Queens' head coach.
