HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
The Phoenix took fifth place with a 14-under-par 850 at the season-opening Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate this past week, marking a strong start to the fall campaign.
Jack Wieler – a reigning co-champion of the tournament from 2024 – tied for third individually with a 9-under 207 while freshmen
William Carr and
Drew Yeagley tied for 16th at 3-under (213). Strong starts aren't unfamiliar to the Phoenix, which has notched a top-five finish in the season opener in each of the past three years.
NEW FACES, SAME ELON
Much has changed in Elon's personnel department since the Phoenix captured its first CAA Championship last spring and advanced to the NCAA Bremerton Regional. Elon's lineup for the second straight tournament to start the fall season will feature four freshmen – Carr, Yeagley,
Dylan Lewis and
Bence Somogyi, the latter making his collegiate debut – alongside the veteran Wieler. A fifth freshman will be in the mix too, as
Martin Saquicoray will play as an individual in Waynesville. The rookies already showcased their talents in Myrtle Beach with Carr and Yeagley earning top-16 finishes and Lewis shooting even par over the final 36 holes on the way to a 6-over 222.
JACK ATTACK
Already a two-time All-CAA selection in as many years, Wieler is primed for a big junior year with the Phoenix in 2025-26. He got off on the right foot last week with 9-under 207 that was good for a tie for third individually in Myrtle Beach and will look to build off that effort in the mountains this weekend.
IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT
Elon men's golf head coach Don is in his 12th year at the program's helm in 2025-26. Hill was honored as the 2024-25 CAA Coach of the Year following the Phoenix's impressive conference title win in New Jersey last April, in addition to six other top-five finishes during the season. With six total freshmen on the 10-man roster this year, Hill will look to blend Elon's mix of experienced and unproven as the five-tournament fall season continues.
