WAYNESVILLE – Freshman
Drew Yeagley carded his third consecutive under-par round to lead the Elon men's golf team through the opening round of the JT Poston Invitational at the Waynesville Inn and Golf Club on Sunday.
Yeagley shot 2-under-par 68 and is tied for seventh place individually while the Phoenix collectively finished the first round in a tie for ninth with a 6-over 286. Elon is nine strokes outside of the top five with 36 holes to go. Drexel (-7), Southern Mississippi (-5), host Western Carolina (-5), Virginia Tech (-3) and Kennesaw State (-3) rounded out the top five at Sunday's end.
Yeagley – who placed T16 in his collegiate debut at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate last week – birdied holes 10 and 11 to start his day in Waynesville and added another pair on 17 and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. He shot bogey on holes 1, 3 and 7 on the front nine but was able to balance it out with another two birdies on holes 2 and 9, the latter ending his round on a high note.
Yeagley led the 90-man field with a 2-under score on par 3s. The freshman is only four shots behind co-leaders Tyler Jones (Western Carolina) and Caleb Taylor (Drexel).
Jack Wieler completed the first round three strokes behind Yeagley with a 1-over 71. After getting into trouble with a 4-over, four-hole stretch between 14-17, Wieler was 2-under across his final 10 holes, including a birdie on hole 9 to end the day.
