MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Elon's
Jack Wieler is in contention for a repeat performance at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, sitting in a tie for second place through 36 holes after sharing the individual title at the event a year ago.
Wieler – who won a three-way share of the individual crown at the tournament's inaugural event last September – carded 68 and 69 for a 7-under-par 137 across the first two rounds of Elon's fall season. The Elon men's golf team is in sole possession of sixth place (569, -7) and nine shots off the lead with 18 holes to play at Grande Dunes Golf Club. FGCU (-16), Texas State (-14) and Florida Atlantic (-12) round out the top three after two rounds.
The Phoenix ended the first round in solo third with an 8-under 280, completing its final four holes of the round Monday morning after inclement weather in the Myrtle Beach area suspended play Sunday.
Wieler wasn't a one-man show for the Phoenix as freshman
William Carr shot a masterful bogey-free, 5-under 67 in the opening round. The Raleigh native tallied birdies on holes 2, 4, 7, 13 and 18 between Sunday and Monday to notch the Phoenix's best 18-hole score of the tournament so far. Fellow freshman
Drew Yeagley was under-par in the second round with a 71 after sinking five birdies in a 10-hole span between holes 4-13.
Carr and Yeagley are tied for 24th individually at 1-under (143) through 36 holes.
Wieler is six strokes behind individual leader Jack Lee (-13) of Coastal Carolina and is knotted in second place with Florida Atlantic's Nashawn Tyson and Texas State's Bryce Womack. Wieler, a junior, was bogey free in the second round as he fired birdies on holes 7, 9 and 17.
