BOSTON – The Elon men's basketball team committed a season-high 18 turnovers as Northeastern used a decisive second-half run to pull away in an 85-78 setback for the Phoenix on Thursday night at the Cabot Center.
Â
Elon (11-7, 3-2 CAA) held its largest lead of the night at 72-65 with 8:16 left in the contest but the Huskies (6-11, 2-4) took control from there, closing the game on a 20-6 run to snap the Phoenix's two-game win streak and split the teams' season series.
Â
Bryson Cokley had a career night with career highs of 26 points – on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc – and seven assists to go along with seven rebounds in 32 minutes played off the bench.
Chandler Cuthrell added 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting while
Randall Pettus II knocked down four 3-pointers in a 12-point effort.
Â
Elon trailed narrowly, 41-39, at halftime despite digging itself into an early 25-6 deficit after the Huskies went on a 20-0 run. Cokley and
Chandler Cuthrell fueled the first-half rally, combining for 22 straight points for the Phoenix over a seven-minute span. Cokley's third 3-pointer of the opening period knotted the game at 38-38 before the Huskies took a two-point advantage into the locker room.
Â
It was another Cokley triple – his fifth of the night – that gave Elon a 65-63 advantage with 11:02 remaining, marking its first lead since 6-5 less than 90 seconds into the contest.
Â
Xavier Abreu scored the first 12 points of Northeastern's 20-6 game-ending run, including two 3-pointers that sandwiched a fastbreak dunk to reclaim the lead for the Huskies at 73-72. William Kermoury scored a game-high 31 points with seven 3-pointers while Abreu had 22 to lead Northeastern.
Â
Elon shot 49% (27-for-55) overall and 48% (13-for-27) from distance. The Phoenix was outrebounded 33-32 and outscored 40-28 in the paint. The Huskies converted Elon's 18 turnovers into 29 points.
NOTES
- Bryson Cokley is just the second Phoenix to finish with a stat line of 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a single game in Elon's Division I era (1999-present), joining Steve Santa Ana (34-10-9 at Towson on March 2, 2019).
- Elon entered the contest averaging 9.8 turnovers per game in conference play.
- The Phoenix's 13 3-pointers made were its most since knocking down 16 against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 15.
