Phoenix’s Rally Falls Short Against Stony Brook

Elon Falls Behind Early In 72-68 Defeat

ELON – Stony Brook rode a dominant first half and held off a late rally to defeat the Elon men's basketball team, 72-68, on Saturday afternoon at Schar Center.

Stony Brook (14-9, 6-4 CAA) built a 12-point halftime lead and pushed its advantage to as many as 15 late in the opening period behind hot perimeter shooting. The Seawolves, who have won five straight league games, knocked down 9 of 16 from 3-point range in the first half and led 48-36 at the break.

Elon (13-10, 5-5 CAA) answered with a steadier second-half effort, outscoring Stony Brook 32-24 and briefly taking the lead twice, but could not convert enough late possessions to complete the comeback.

Rob Brown III led Stony Brook with 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, while Andrej Shoshkikj added 17 points and eight rebounds. Ethan Simmon scored nine points, all from beyond the arc, and Quin Gorman finished with eight points and six rebounds as the Seawolves connected on 13 of 33 from deep overall.

Elon placed three players in double figures, led by Chandler Cuthrell's 17 points and six rebounds. Bryson Cokley scored 11 points and Ja'Juan Carr added 11 points and four assists. Isaac Harrell chipped in eight points for the Phoenix, which shot 40% from the field and held a 32-14 edge in points in the paint.

After trailing by 13 early in the second half, Elon used a 10-3 run to get back within one possession. Cuthrell's free throws gave the Phoenix a 58-57 lead with 7:35 remaining – their first lead since the opening minutes.

Stony Brook answered with timely second-chance opportunities. Brown hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:52 left to put the Seawolves ahead 68-66. Ned Hull tied it with a layup on the next possession, but Gorman converted two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to restore the lead.

Elon had chances in the final minute but came up empty on its final three shot attempts. Stony Brook sealed the result at the foul line in the closing seconds.

The Phoenix held Stony Brook to 17.9% shooting (5-of-28) in the second half and 36.1% for the game, but the Seawolves won the rebounding battle, 39-36, and converted 14 second-chance points to Elon's four.
