Phoenix Edged By Tigers On Road

Elon Comes Up Short In 58-56 Defeat

TOWSON, Md. – Tyler Coleman scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket with 14 seconds remaining, as Towson edged the Elon men's basketball team 58-56 on Thursday night at SECU Arena.

Coleman's driving layup in the closing seconds capped a back-and-forth finish and lifted the Tigers (15-14, 7-9 CAA) to the two-point victory. Elon had one final chance, but Bryson Cokley's 3-point attempt with three seconds left missed, and Ned Hull couldn't connect with Chandler Cuthrell on an inbounds pass as time expired.

Chandler Cuthrell led Elon (14-15, 6-10 CAA) with 13 points, while Kacper Klaczek and Cokley each added 12. The Phoenix shot 37% from the field (20 of 54) and went 7 of 19 from 3-point range.

Towson shot 36.2% overall (21 of 58) but made 13 of 17 free throws and held a 39-33 rebounding advantage. The Tigers also finished with a 34-26 edge in points in the paint.

Elon trailed 26-22 at halftime after shooting 33.3% in the opening 20 minutes but responded by hitting 10 of 24 shots (41.7%) and 6 of 11 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Phoenix started the second half with an 8-0 run and later built its largest lead at 46-39 on a Cuthrell 3-pointer with 9:57 to go. Cokley sparked the surge with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Ned Hull later knocked down a triple to keep Elon in front.

Towson answered with a 10-0 run midway through the half to regain control. The Tigers capitalized on second-chance opportunities, finishing with a 10-5 advantage in second-chance points.

After Ja'Juan Carr tied the game at 56 on a layup with 1:27 left, neither team scored until Coleman converted his decisive drive in the final seconds.

Jack Doumbia Jr. added 13 points and nine rebounds for Towson, while Ryan Conway chipped in 11 points. Elon held Towson's leading scorers – Tyler Tejada (16.5 PPG) and Dylan Williamson (14.0 PPG) to six and zero points, respectively. It was only the second time in Williamson's college career that he's been held scoreless.
