NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elon men's golf team used a record-breaking final round to finish second at the Surf Club Invitational on Tuesday at Surf Golf & Beach Club. The Phoenix fired a 21-under-par 263 over the final 18 holes to close the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 34-under 818 (280-275-263).
The 21-under score and 263 both set Elon program records for a single round, surpassing the previous marks established at the 2021 Phoenix Invitational.
Elon was narrowly edged by Georgia State, which won the team title at 37-under 815 (274-275-266). The two programs separated themselves from the rest of the field during the final round. Augusta (-15), Boston College (-14) and North Carolina A&T (-12) rounded out the top five, while the Aggies' Drew Walker (-13) earned individual medalist honors.
Drew Yeagley paced Elon with a tie for second place at 12-under 201 (68-68-65). He was followed closely by
Jack Wieler, who tied for fourth at 10-under 203 (72-66-65), and
William Carr, who finished tied for 10th at 7-under 206 (70-72-64).
Second-round play resumed at 9:10 a.m. ET Tuesday after action was suspended due to darkness Monday evening. Elon, which had started the second round strong on Monday, maintained its momentum and completed the first 36 holes in second place. The Phoenix held a two-shot lead over third-place Augusta and fourth-place Boston College while trailing Georgia State by six strokes.
Wieler capped his second round with an ace on No. 18, holing out on the 205-yard par-3 to finish with a 5-under 66.
Elon then surged in the final round. Carr carded a bogey-free 7-under 64 to match North Carolina A&T's Walker for the lowest round of the tournament. Wieler and Yeagley were nearly as strong, each recording seven birdies in the round to offset a lone bogey. Wieler highlighted his round with a front-nine 31 that featured five birdies.
Dylan Lewis (-1, 212) and
Landon Durham (-1, 212) each tied for 33rd to round out Elon's scoring lineup.
