EATONTON, Ga. – Behind a pair of top-five individual performances, the Elon men's golf team put itself in contention after the opening round of the Linger Longer Invitational at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
Junior
Jack Wieler fired a 6-under 66 and freshman
Dylan Lewis added a 5-under 67 to pace the Phoenix, as the duo sits tied for second and fifth individually, respectively, after 18 holes.
As a team, Elon posted a 9-under 279 and enters the second round in sixth place after its four counting scorers shot 10-under on the back nine holes. The Phoenix is just two shots back of Mercer and Ohio State, which are tied for second at 11-under, while No. 35 Georgia holds the team lead at 21-under.
Wieler's round was highlighted by a dominant 5-under 31 on the back nine, positioning him firmly in the hunt for individual medalist honors. Lewis followed closely behind, delivering a bogey-free round.
William Carr finished even-par (72) in the opening round, while
Drew Yeagley carded a 2-over 74.
Landon Durham rounded out the Phoenix lineup with an 8-over 80.
