EATONTON, Ga. – Elon maintained strong position Saturday at the Linger Longer Invitational, climbing three spots into third place after 36 holes at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
The Phoenix sit at 11-under par 565 (279-286), trailing only No. 35 Georgia (-31) and No. 16 Alabama (-13) heading into Sunday's final round.
Elon's move up the leaderboard was fueled by a pair of steady, veteran performances, as junior
Jack Wieler and redshirt junior
Landon Durham each carded 3-under 69s in the second round.
Wieler rebounded from an early double-bogey on his opening hole and quickly settled in, notching four birdies across his front nine to make the turn at 2-under. He added another two birdies to counter a bogey on the back nine to post his 69, keeping him firmly in the mix near the top of the individual leaderboard, trailing clubhouse leader Grayson Wood (-11, Georgia) by just two shots.
Durham rebounded from an uncharacteristic 8-over 80 in the opening round with a dominant back nine holes Saturday. After trading one birdie for two bogeys on the front nine, Durham was bogey free after making the turn and tallied four birdies on holes 11, 12, 14 and 18 to secure the 3-under finish.
Dylan Lewis posted a 2-over 74 to stay inside the top 15 individually at 3-under overall, while
Drew Yeagley battled to a 2-over 74 with four birdies offset by a handful of dropped shots.
William Carr rounded out the lineup with a 6-over 78 in the second round.
