SNOW HILL – Elon men's golf fired a 13-under par 275 in the opening round of the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate on Friday and will take a one-shot lead into Saturday's second round at Cutter Creek Golf Club.
The Phoenix placed five golfers inside the top 25 after 18 holes and were paced by freshman
Dylan Lewis, who sits atop the individual leaderboard following a bogey-free, 7-under 65. Lewis carded seven birdies on the day, converting on holes 2, 4, 7, 8, 11, 13 and 14 to establish the early clubhouse lead.
Elon built its team score with sharp play throughout the lineup, including a pair of under-par rounds from
Drew Yeagley and
Jack Wieler. Both players shot 3-under 69 and are tied for eighth individually, giving the Phoenix three golfers inside the top 10 heading into the weekend.
William Carr and
Landon Durham added even-par 72s. Durham highlighted his round with an eagle on the par-4 sixth, helping boost the Phoenix's vault up the leaderboard on the front nine holes.
Elon holds a narrow lead over CAA counterpart Campbell, which sits second at 12-under, while tournament host East Carolina is third at 11-under.
