SOUTHPORT – Elon opened play at the Coastal Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship on Friday, carding a first-round 20-over par 308 at The Clubs at St. James to sit in fourth place after 18 holes.
The Phoenix were paced by
Kelly Zhao, who turned in a 1-over 73 and is tied for third individually. The sophomore caught a groove toward the end of the front nine, tallying a birdie on No. 7 and an eagle on the par-4 No. 9. She's one of seven golfers tied for third and will enter the second round trailing clubhouse leader Victoria Levy (UNCW) by four shots.
Garland Gould, making her season debut, followed with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 12th, while
Ashley Lafontaine carded a 5-over 77 to sit in a tie for 18th.
Lilli Downer posted an 11-over 83 (T28) and
Emma Hansen rounded out the lineup with a 13-over 85 (T36). Gould notched four birdies on holes No. 1, 4, 13 and 14 and was even par through 17 holes before stumbling with a triple-bogey on the final hole of the day.
UNCW holds the team lead at 4-over par 292, followed by Charleston (+6, 294) and Campbell (+7, 295). Elon enters the second round 12 strokes off the lead and four shots clear of fifth-place William & Mary (+28, 316).
