SOUTHPORT – Elon shaved six strokes off its opening-round score and held steady in fourth place after the second round of the Coastal Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship on Saturday at The Clubs at St. James.
The Phoenix posted a 14-over par 302 in round two and sit at 34-over 610 (308-302) through 36 holes. UNCW continues to lead the field at 7-over 583, followed by Charleston at 9-over 585 and Campbell at 14-over 590.
Kelly Zhao paced Elon for the second straight day, carding a 3-over 75 to stay among the top 10 individually (seventh) at 4-over 148 (73-75). Zhao was steady across her round, going out in 2-over 38 before closing with a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
Senior
Ashley Lafontaine matched Zhao's round with a 3-over 75 and climbed into a tie for 14th at 8-over 152 (77-75). Lafontaine turned in one of the more consistent cards of the day for the Phoenix, balancing her round with a 37 on the front and 38 on the back.
Lilli Downer delivered Elon's biggest improvement, bouncing back from an opening-round 83 with a 3-over 75 on Saturday. The freshman moved into 23rd place at 14-over 158 (83-75), highlighted by a 1-under 35 – which included a birdie on the par-3 No. 13 – on her back nine.
Emma Hansen rounded out the scoring four with a 5-over 77 and sits in 29th at 19-over 162 (85-77).
Sakura Kawakami entered the lineup for round two in place of
Garland Gould and posted an 86 in her first round of the championship.
William & Mary is fifth at 57-over 633 to round out the top five teams.
