ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Elon opened play at the Coastal Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship on Sunday with a strong first-round showing, carding an 8-under 280 to sit fourth after 18 holes at Dataw Island Golf Club.
The Phoenix are tightly packed near the top of the leaderboard, with just five shots separating the top five teams. UNCW leads the field at 12-under 276, followed closely by Campbell (-11, 277), Towson (-10, 278), Elon (-8, 280) and Charleston (-7, 281).
Elon was paced by a pair of under-par rounds from veterans
Jack Wieler and
Landon Durham, who each fired 3-under 69s and are tied for ninth individually. Wieler heated up on the back nine holes, tallying four birdies in a five-hole span between No. 10-14, while Durham highlighted his day with an eagle on the par-5 third hole.
Freshmen
William Carr and
Dylan Lewis each contributed 1-under 71s in their CAA Championship debuts and are tied for 20th. Both players delivered consistent rounds to keep the Phoenix in contention, combining for nine birdies on the day.
Drew Yeagley rounded out Elon's lineup with a 6-over 78 and is tied for 44th.
UNCW's James Rico (-6) is the clubhouse leader following a bogey-free first round.
