ELON – Elon men's basketball head coach Billy Taylor announced Wednesday the hiring of Steve Robinson, a veteran coach with more than four decades of Division I experience and three national championships, as Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the Phoenix.
 
Robinson joins the Elon staff following a 42-year coaching career that included stops at Arizona, North Carolina, Kansas, Florida State and Tulsa. Over the course of his career, Robinson advanced to the NCAA Tournament 31 times, reached eight Final Fours and helped capture three national championships.
 
"Steve Robinson brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience to our program," Taylor said. "He has been part of championship teams at the highest level of college basketball, and his perspective will be invaluable to our coaches and student-athletes. Beyond his accomplishments, Steve is a tremendous person and relationship-builder who shares our commitment to developing young men. We are grateful to welcome Steve, Lisa, and his family to Elon."
 
Robinson most recently served as an assistant coach at Arizona from 2021-25, helping guide the Wildcats to four conference championships, including two Pac-12 regular season titles and two Pac-12 Tournament crowns. Arizona also advanced to the Sweet 16 three times during his tenure in Tucson.
 
Prior to Arizona, Robinson spent 18 seasons at North Carolina as an assistant coach under Hall of Fame head coach Roy Williams. During his time in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels won three NCAA national championships and made four Final Four appearances. Robinson played a major role in recruiting and player development during one of the most successful stretches in program history, helping mentor multiple NBA players and All-Americans.

"After taking a year away from coaching and moving to Elon to be closer to family, I am ready to get back to doing what I love, and love what I am doing."
 
Among the notable players Robinson coached or recruited during his career are Paul Pierce, Danny Green, Harrison Barnes, Ty Lawson, Raymond Felton and Caleb Love. Across his career, Robinson coached or recruited more than 60 NBA players.
 
Robinson also served seven seasons as a Division I head coach, compiling a 110-104 overall record between stops at Tulsa and Florida State. He guided Tulsa to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a conference championship during his two seasons leading the Golden Hurricane.
 
Widely respected throughout the profession, Robinson was inducted into the A STEP UP Assistant Coach Hall of Fame in 2019. He was also recognized multiple times as one of the nation's top assistant coaches and recruiters during his career.
 
A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Robinson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Radford, before assistant coaching stints at Cornell and Kansas launched a distinguished coaching career.
 
Robinson earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Radford in 1981 and later completed his master's degree in counseling in 1985. He has been inducted into the hall of fame at William Fleming High School, Ferrum Junior College and Radford University.
 
Robinson and his wife, Lisa, have four children, daughters Shauna and Kiaya and sons Tarron and Denzel. Tarron is married to Kathryn, while Kiaya is married to Will Artis. The Robinsons also have two grandchildren, Chloe and Cole.
