WAYNESVILLE – Sophomore
Drew Yeagley shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 65 to lead the Elon men's golf team through the opening round of the JT Poston Invitational on Sunday at the Waynesville Inn & Golf Club.
Yeagley sits in second individually after his six-birdie performance, while the Phoenix is tied for seventh in the 16-team field after posting a 5-under 279. Elon is seven shots behind first-place Virginia Tech (-12, 272) and just one shot outside of the top five.
All six golfers began their rounds on hole 10, with four of the Phoenix's five lineup players carding scores of 2-over or better.
ROUND ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Yeagley turned in a flawless opening round with six birdies and 12 pars. He made birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 15 to play his opening nine in 3-under 33 before adding birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and 6 on his final nine. His 6-under 65 has him alone in second place after 18 holes, trailing only Virginia Tech's Benjamin Baker (-8).
- William Carr supplied Elon's other under-par counting round with a 1-under 70 and is tied for 28th. Carr opened with a birdie on No. 10 and later made birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 18. He added another on No. 4 during his final nine.
- Jack Wieler finished at even-par 71 and is tied for 41st. After making the turn at 3-over, Wieler played his final nine in 2-under, recording birdies on Nos. 5, 6 and 9.
- Dylan Lewis carded a 2-over 73 to round out Elon's counting scores and is tied for 67th. Lewis made birdies on Nos. 18 and 8.
