WAYNESVILLE – Behind another standout round from sophomore
Drew Yeagley, the Elon men's golf team climbed three spots on the leaderboard Monday during the second round of the JT Poston Invitational at Waynesville Inn & Golf Club.
The Phoenix carded a 12-under-par 272, improving by seven shots from its opening round, to move into a tie for fourth at 17-under-par 551 through 36 holes. Elon is tied with South Carolina and sits five shots behind Lipscomb and Virginia Tech, which share second place at 22-under. NC State leads the field at 26-under-par 542.
Yeagley followed Sunday's bogey-free 65 with a collegiate 18-hole low of 7-under-par 64 on Monday. At 13-under 129 for the tournament, Yeagley shares the individual lead with Virginia Tech's Benjamin Baker heading into Tuesday's final round.
ROUND TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Yeagley opened his round with consecutive pars before making birdies on five of his next six holes to turn in a 5-under 30. After starting the back nine with an eagle on the par-5 10th and a birdie on No. 11, Yeagley recovered from a double bogey at the 15th with a birdie on the par-5 18th to finish at 7-under 64. He recorded seven birdies and an eagle during the round.
- Jack Wieler surged into a tie for 18th following a 4-under-par 67. Wieler made six birdies, including three on his final six holes, and sits at 4-under 138 through two rounds.
- Dylan Lewis posted a 2-under-par 69 to move into a tie for 53rd at even-par 142. Lewis made five birdies Monday, including three straight on holes 10-12.
- William Carr is also tied for 53rd at even par following a 1-over 72. Carr made two birdies on his opening nine and played his first 11 holes at 2-under.
