WAYNESVILLE – The Elon men's golf team closed the JT Poston Invitational with a 1-over-par 285 on Tuesday, finishing seventh overall at 16-under-par 836 at the Waynesville Inn & Golf Club.
The Phoenix entered the final round tied for fourth and made an early charge up the leaderboard behind a strong opening nine. Elon played the front nine in 7-under among its four counting scores and climbed into third place, reaching as low as 25-under during the round before giving shots back over the closing holes.
South Carolina won the team title at 31-under-par 821, while NC State and Virginia Tech tied for second at 26-under. Southern Miss placed fourth at 24-under and Lipscomb finished fifth at 21-under.
Drew Yeagley paced Elon for the tournament, tying for fourth individually at 10-under-par 203. The sophomore followed rounds of 65 and 64 with a 3-over 74 on Tuesday.
ROUND 3 HIGHLIGHTS
- Jack Wieler and Dylan Lewis led Elon in the final round with matching 2-under-par 69s.
- Wieler caught fire on the front nine, carding a bogey-free 5-under 30 with birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9. He added birdies on Nos. 13 and 18 to finish tied for 15th at 6-under 207.
- Lewis recorded an eagle on the par-5 sixth and added birdies on Nos. 3, 7, 13 and 18. He closed the tournament with consecutive rounds of 69 to finish tied for 37th at 2-under 211.
- Yeagley, who entered the final round with a share of the individual lead, made the turn at 1-under after birdies on Nos. 2 and 6. He finished with a 3-over 74 and tied for fourth overall at 10-under 203.
- Landon Durham contributed Elon's fourth counting score with a 2-over 73. He opened his back nine with consecutive birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 and finished tied for 89th at 9-over 222.
