DELAND, FL -- The Elon College softball team ended a five-game losing streak as freshman Jessica Vanderploeg doubled home Emily Hall in the 10th inning en route to a 3-2 win at Stetson University. With the victory, the Fightin' Christians (6-12) gained a split in the doubleheader, losing the opener to the Hatters (18-23) 3-0 at the Sperling Complex.
Elon starter Gina Krueger improved her record to 3-4 winning the second game, as she struck out 15 batters in her complete game performance.
The Fightin' Christians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when sophomore Shaunda Legg's two-out, two-run single to rightfield scored Evie Benson and Kristen Kendrick. Legg and Holly Briel each tallied three hits for the game.
Stetson plated a pair of runs in their half of the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
In the opener, Kelli Lightner (2-4) limited Elon to only three hits and struck out six in a seven inning shut out, the first of her career. Adrienne Broyles went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Heather McCrimmon and Celeste Porterfield each tallied a pair of hits.
The victory was Stetson coach Frank Griffin's 300th career win.
