Elon Remains Undefeated with 1-0 Victory over Coastal Caroli

CONWAY, SC -- Erin Morse's goal early in the first half proved to be all that Elon College would need as the Phoenix defeated Coastal Carolina 1-0 in a Big South Conference women's soccer contest on Wednesday night at CCU Soccer Stadium. Elon remains undefeated in five Big South contests and raises its overall record to 7-9-0. The Lady Chanticleers fall to 5-6-3 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.

Elon's Jessica Mills crossed the ball to the front of the Coastal goal on a corner kick and Morse outjumped three Lady Chanticleer defenders for a header into the nets 6:23 into the first half.

The Lady Chanticleers came out attacking early in the second half but failed to get a good shot at the Elon goal. Following the first few minutes of action to open the second half, the Phoenix began to dominate play in the midfield and controlled much of the play. Coastal did have a couple of opportunities in the final 15 minutes, but a foul called against the Lady Chants and a save by Elon keeper Sommer Cork secured the victory.

Coastal Carolina outshot Elon 8-7 as the early goal gave Elon the opportunity to play more defense and not play an attacking style. Cork posted five saves in recording the shutout, while Coastal keeper Candice Doten posted three saves.

The Phoenix will take on Liberty Saturday at 1:00 at Rudd Field.
