CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Big South Conference announced Friday night that Charleston Southern University will be the number one seed for the 2001 Men's Tennis Championships, and Coastal Carolina will be the top seed for the 2001 Women's Tennis Championships.
Both tournaments begin Thursday, April 19 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon College. The Championships will run through Saturday, April 21. The first round will be played at two separate sites, the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at Elon College and the Burlington Tennis Facility. All semifinal matches and both championship matches will be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Charleston Southern, the men's number one seed, will be looking for its fourth straight championship and the fifth in the last six years. The Buccaneers open against eighth-seeded UNC Asheville at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Elon College. Fourth-seeded Radford will play fifth-seeded Liberty at noon on Thursday at the Burlington Tennis Facility. Second-seeded Winthrop faces seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. at Elon. Third-seeded High Point will play sixth-seeded Elon in the final match of the first round at 3 p.m. at Elon.
The winner of the Radford/Liberty men's match will advance to face the winner of the Charleston Southern/UNC Asheville match in Friday's first men's semifinal at 9 a.m. The Winthrop/Coastal Carolina winner will face the High Point/Elon winner at noon in Friday's second men's semifinal. The men's title match will be played Saturday at noon.
In the women's tournament, top-seeded Coastal Carolina will face eighth-seeded Liberty at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Elon College. Fourth seeded High Point will face fifth-seeded Winthrop, last year's champion, at 9 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Facility. Second-seeded Charleston Southern will play seventh-seeded Radford at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Elon College. Elon, the number-three seed will face sixth-seeded UNC Asheville at 2 p.m.on Thursday at Elon.
The Coastal Carolina/Liberty winner will face the High Point/Winthrop winner at 10 a.m. in Friday's first women's semifinal. The Charleston Southern/Radford winner will play the Elon/UNC Asheville winner in Friday's second women's semifinal at 1 p.m. The women's title match will be Saturday at 9 a.m.
