ELON, NC--Elon's Brent McDowell scored the game winner at the 4:49 mark in overtime to claim the 2-1 victory over visiting Birmingham-Southern.

The Panthers (3-9-1) took an early lead after Jamie Holmes scored with 38 minutes remaining in the first half. The goal was assisted by Greig Munro. Minutes later the Phoenix (5-8-1) evened the score at one with an unassisted header by Tim Sullivan.

Elon outshot the Panthers by a 16-7 margin and held the advantage in corner kicks with 8-1. Both teams were penalized with two yellow cards each, in what proved to be a physical game. The Phoenix had eight shots on goal in the second period but were unable to capitalize on this six shot advantage.

With five minutes and fifty seconds left in the first overtime, Elon's Brent McDowell ended the game with his first goal of the season as the Phoenix celebrated their final home game of the season.

The Phoenix will finish the regular season with five road games. Elon travels to Winston-Salem on Wednesday to take on #2 Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
