ELON, NC--The Bulldogs Rose Butler had 20 kills and Leslie Whitfield added 28 digs as UNC Asheville claimed its third straight Big South Conference win.
Elon (7-21, 2-8 Big South) took the early lead in game one by scoring the first two points. UNC Asheville (20-7, 8-2 Big South) evened the score and went on to score the next four points. Elon would get within 11 at 28-17, but did not score the remainder of game one.
The Bulldogs surged out to a 6-1 lead in game two, before Elon was able to even the score at 10. Elon took control of the match at this point and had the lead by six before UNC Asheville came from behind to close the gap at 24-26. The Phoenix would only allow the Bulldogs to score one more point, before they claimed game two 30-27.
The third game was back-and-forth until Asheville rattled off nine consecutive points to take the lead at 21-12. Elon put forth great effort as they scored seven straight points in put them within 12. However, the Bulldogs were able to get the three remaining points to close out game three.
In the fourth and final game, UNC Asheville looked like they were on their way to an easy victory, before Elon put together a four point streak to try and come from behind at 29-26. UNC Asheville closed out the match with an attack error from the Phoenix.
Elon's Maria LaBrutto contributed 10 kills and 23 digs to lead the Phoenix. Laura Griffin added another 10 kills and Katie Forman accumulated 11 digs. Katie Newby led the Phoenix in assists with 26.
Rose Butler led the Bulldogs with 20 kills and added nine digs. Leslie Whitfield was the Bulldogs leader in digs with 28. Amanda Wiles grabbed 56 assists for UNC Asheville.
The Phoenix return to action tomorrow night, November 2, at 7 p.m. as they host Birmingham-Southern.
