ELON – The Elon University volleyball team heads to South Carolina this weekend to conclude its regular season as the Phoenix (7-18, 5-9 CAA) faces College of Charleston (16-9, 10-4 CAA) in a pair of matches at TD Arena.

SERIES HISTORY (CofC leads 37-6)
- Charleston holds a 37-6 all-time advantage over the Maroon and Gold in a series dating back to 1974. The Cougars enter the weekend having won four straight and five of the past six contests against Elon.
- The Phoenix dropped both four-set matches last season at Schar Center when the teams last met. Elon totaled 88 kills in the series, led by Cameron Lanier's 26 kills (3.25 per set). Caroline Berlekamp added seven kills and five service aces while pacing the team with seven total blocks.
- Elon's most recent win against Charleston came in five sets on Oct. 23, 2022. The Phoenix's last road win at TD Arena was during the 2021 campaign, when the Maroon and Gold earned a pair of four-set victories.
LAST TIME OUT
- Elon swept intrastate foe UNCW in its most recent CAA series at Schar Center. The Phoenix took the opener 3-1 before outlasting the Seahawks in five sets on Senior Day.
- Sophomore Anna Sewell led Elon with 30 kills in the series, averaging 3.33 per set. Lanier followed with 25 kills (2.78 per set) and a .321 attack percentage, while Simrin Carlsen averaged 2.44 kills per set and tallied 28 digs (3.11 per set).
- Sewell recorded a career-high 16 kills in the opening match, hitting .308 in the 3-1 victory. The sweep extended Elon's win streak against the Seahawks to four matches.
ELON AT A GLANCE
- Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Elon sits one game back of the sixth and final CAA Tournament spot with a 5-9 conference record. The Phoenix is tied with William & Mary and Northeastern, trailing Stony Brook (6-8) by one game.
- Elon is hitting .172 as a team, averaging 11.3 kills and 10.6 assists per set while holding opponents to a .237 mark.
- Five players are averaging at least two kills per set, led by senior Clara Simmons (2.63). Sewell follows at 2.59, with Simrin Carlsen (2.39) and Cameron Lanier (2.36) close behind. Carlsen leads the team in total kills (208) and digs per set (3.18), ranking in the CAA's top 10.
- Catherine Rucker ranks among league leaders in both service aces per set (0.33) and hitting percentage (.276) and leads Elon with 53 total blocks.
- Now in its 54th season of competition and 27th at the Division I level, Elon returned 10 letterwinners from last season, including three starters. The Phoenix also welcomed five newcomers in 2025, four freshmen and one transfer.
- Lanier earned 2025 Preseason All-CAA laurels with teammates Rucker and Caroline Berlekamp also getting preseason league recognition.
- Elon returned 61% of its kills, 25% of its assists, 35% of its digs and 62% of its points scored from 2024.
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
- The Cougars enter the weekend 16-9 overall and 10-4 in CAA play, currently fourth in the conference standings. Charleston split its most recent series at William & Mary, sweeping the opener before dropping a five-set finale.
- Charleston averages 12.49 kills per set with a .212 hitting percentage. Graduate outside hitter Izzy Marinelli leads the team with 313 kills (3.10 per set), while freshman middle blocker Caroline Noonan ranks second with 269 kills (2.69 per set) and a .337 hitting percentage.
- Junior Lauren Dow directs the Cougar offense, averaging 9.02 assists per set, third-best in the CAA. Freshman libero Jumana Martin leads the league in digs per set (5.10).
- Jason Kepner is in his 19th season as the head coach at College of Charleston.
WELCOME COACH TROY
- Elon head coach Matt Troy is in his first season with the Phoenix after six years leading Johns Hopkins, where he compiled a 151-17 record and captured the 2019 NCAA Division III national championship.
- Troy has a career record of 357-96 (.788) over 14 seasons at the Division III level, including a 66-match winning streak from 2019-21. He ranks among the top 10 all-time and active coaches in Division III history by win percentage.
ALL-AMERICAN NEW FACE
- Among the new faces for the Phoenix this season includes graduate student transfer Simrin Carlsen, an outside hitter from Edison, N.J. Carlsen arrives to the Phoenix after competing at Johns Hopkins from 2021-24, recording over 1,000 career kills under former Blue Jay and now current Elon coach Matt Troy.
- Carlsen posted a decorated career at Johns Hopkins, as she was a two-time AVCA All-American, earning First Team laurels in 2023 and Second Team accolades in 2024. She was also a two-time AVCA First Team All-Region V (2023, 2024).
- She was named Baltimore Regional Most Outstanding Player in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and earned Centennial Conference Player of the Year that same season.

- Pending on qualifying this weekend, Elon will compete at the 2025 CAA Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 20-22 at Towson University.
