ROCK HILL, SC -- Second-seeded Coastal Carolina advanced to the Big South Conference Tournament Championship game for the second consecutive season after defeating sixth-seeded Elon 2-0, Friday afternoon.
The Chanticleers (18-1-2) scored their first goal in the 31st minute when Dario Grassini scored off a rebound. Randall Owen took a cross and his shot was saved by Elon keeper Kyle Ostendorf and Grassini was there to put the ball into the net. Thomas Rutter put Coastal Carolina up 2-0 in the 70th minute when Thomas Rutter bent a free kick around the wall and into the left corner of the net for the goal.
The shots favored Coastal Carolina 17-5. Andrew Paxton made four saves to earn the shutout. Ostendorf made six saves for Elon. Elon finished the season with a 7-13-1 record.
Coastal Carolina will face the winner of the match between top-seeded Winthrop and fourth-seeded Radford on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
